John Towne
Devoted husband, friend, artist, baker, house manager and storyteller was diagnosed with cancer on Tuesday, June 11th. He is facing the fight of his life and is doing so from the medically remote island of Vieques, Puerto Rico.
This means chemo, radiation, surgery. It means traveling back and forth from his home in Villa Borinquen multiple times a week and spending many nights in San Juan while traveling to and from the cancer treatment centers. All this in a very weakened condition. Baking requires dedication, strength and long hours. John and Judy have struggled like so many others on Vieques after the hurricane to keep their business alive and now John is struggling for his life.
With the incredible help from Sonia from Corefi and Dr. Ivette Perez, John was fortunate to get health insurance to cover most of his medical expenses. It has taken him months to navigate the complicated insurance and medical system and he has made numerous trips to San Juan for tests and scans just to get a diagnosis and now finally a treatment plan. As those in Vieques know, sometimes the ferry works, sometimes not. Sometimes you can catch a flight, sometimes the flight is cancelled. Imagine this struggle while on Chemo, Radiation or a follow up from Surgery.
Imagine trying to figure out how you are going to pay for all this and keep your family afloat with the exhaustion that come with Cancer Treatments.
We have created this Go Fund Me to help cover the major expenses that will come to help John fight this fight. Leaving Vieques is not an option.
Many of us have tasted his incredible pizza and artisan breads. Many have seen his genius in creating metal art. Many of us have listened as he tells stories as only, he can. And Many of us have spent an magical evening in the home he and Judy created from a one room concrete building 23 years ago connecting us with strangers who are now dear friends.
John and Judy need our help. Any amount of donation is welcome and very helpful.

Note: We have known John and Judy since they moved to Vieques 23 years ago. They are our house manager and gardener but more importantly dear, dear friends. They are adopted family. It turns out that Go Fund me is not supported in Puerto Rico. I have set up a separate bank account in Maine (where we live) to receive your donation The donations will go directly from Go Fund Me into this bank account. I will then send John and Judy a check out of this bank account once a week.
