Help Jeff & Kate Fight Lyme Disease

My name is Kate and I am married to Jeff - the sweetest, wisest, most selfless man I know.  This year, we will celebrate 30 years together!  Unfortunately, Jeff has been ill for almost half of our marriage, with each passing year getting worse.  We have been to a countless number of doctors and specialists, and done all kinds of testing. Still, we had no answer to the cause of his mysterious illness.  We began treating for Lyme Disease 2 years ago but there was no consensus between our doctors as to the accuracy of this diagnosis.  Still, we treated.  Finally, in January of this year (2016) we went to a chronic illness specialist in Seattle who was able to difinitively diagnose Jeff with having had Lyme Disease and still suffering from acute systemic Babesia, a malaria-like parasite contracted with the Lyme, most likely from a tick bite.

I probably would never have done a GoFundMe, but my dear friend Connie has started a fundraising campaign on our behalf to help us raise the funds to cover our family's rising medical costs and she asked me to set up a way for people to donate online.  I am so humbled and thankful for her help!

Though we are hugely grateful to finally have a diagnosis, we were also hit with the overwhelming news that I too probably had Lyme as well as our whole family.  The doctor said it was critical that I treat as well, so as not to pass it back to Jeff.  He explained that Lyme and it's co-infections can be passed on through childbirth, intimacy or blood on blood.  Sadly, everyone tested in the family so far has confirmed the Dr.'s prognosis - we all have Lyme and different variations of the co-infections which include Babesia, Bartinella and Ehrlichia.

With your help, the money we raise will go to help cover our entire family's medical out of pocket costs.  This includes co-pays and all medical bills and procedures not covered by our health insurance.   The most heartbreaking part of all this is that we don't have the funds to help our kids walk through this.  Yet, the sooner they treat, the less invasive it will be. We ARE seeing a slow and steady improvement in Jeff since January so we know we are finally on the right track and working with the right medical team.

Thank you all for your support...I can't begin to tell you what this will mean for our family to be able to do whatever it takes to heal from this insidious disease.

We returned home from Jeff's surgeon appointment with the confirmation that he needs a hip replacement.  Because of the severity of the heavy metals he's dealt with and his difficult time detoxing, it is a definite risk to his brain to add the titanium hip replacement to his body.  We have been told that it's possible to find / request they use a ceramic covered titanium hip replacement joint but that it will be arguably difficult to get insurance to cover this and our regular doctors will probably scoff at this.  Would you please pray?  That we can get the documents needed to prove the necessity of this?

We are also needing to replace our temporary crowns (4 for Jeff, 1 for me) which is another $6,000.  We have set aside gifts for this but we are a good $5,000 short. Our dental insurance will cover half of 1 per year (starting in September)and he cannot risk delaying this any longer.  Hoping that I can...I'll find out next week...

Thank you for your continued prayer and support in all this! We wish more than anything that we could say we're done...and call it " finished" and close this out. All I can say is that we are more grateful than you could ever know...

We were hit hard with food poisoning a few weeks back and it has certainly taken a toll on Jeff especially, but we are recovering. He has been going to PT now on a weekly basis. Today’s consult confirmed that we need to do surgeries as soon as possible.

We will start with Jeff’s hip replacement and move on to both knees. Jeff’s pain has been so severe at times that it is inhibiting any further progress with the Babesia.

Pray that we are able to get in for a consult before the end of the year and that’s Jeff’s health will sustain him through the surgeries. Pray also that we are able and covered with insurance to go with our PT’s first recommendation. As always, any contribution toward our GoFundMe goes completely toward medical and co-pays. So grateful for each and every one of you for your faithful prayers for us!

As I look back on the last year, I am sooo grateful for all the prayer and financial support we've received for our Lyme Disease journey. I am especially grateful for Jeff's slow and steady improvement. He still fluctuates up and down daily with sweats, cognition and stuttering but significantly better than a year ago when we started this campaign. He is continuing his IV's and Lyme Treatment Plan. Our next steps will be knee and hip replacement surgeries. We have held off on this for years because of the risk with Lyme and our specialist has reservations about this, but Jeff's pain, mobility and quality of life is so impacted by this now that I don't think we can wait much longer. He is too weak for surgery at this point, so, he has started PT to prepare for surgeries - we are thinking late winter/ early spring. Fortunately, 80% will be covered by our insurance! Financially, our funds are exhausted outside of our monthly income. Any donations at this point will go toward his weekly IV's and ongoing treatment plan which is huge. It IS making a difference!
Again, thank you for partnering with us. I know Jeff wouldn't be here if we didn't have you and for that, we are eternally grateful!

Much love,
Kate and Jeff

Just wanted to update everyone on Jeff's progress as well as my own. Jeff continues to improve slowly and steadily.  We are working hard to heal his brain of this disease.  Please pray for both his knees, back and especially his right hip and upper right leg.  He needs surgery but it's too risky right now and he has been in a lot of pain.

We were hoping to wrap up with our specialist in Seattle, but after our recent visit, we both felt that God was not releasing us yet. We are trying to pull back though due to cost and he has been understanding and creating our new protocols with that in mind. Another prayer is that, while the number of things we need to take has been reduced, I need to give Jeff shots twice a week - trying to step up to the plate and be faithful with this. I cried doing it up and down his spine at the clinic, but the injections pass the blood brain barrier to the brain making it more successful. He has been doing Neurofeedback which has been helpful and now adding a few other things that help to open his brain to recieve the different treatments more effectively. God has continued to give us favor with providers who are doing things at a reduced cost locally, which is amazing!

Finally, with the cognitive improvements, Jeff is now aware just how far gone he was, and emotionally it's been hard. He's been a real example of trusting God and learning to give himself grace in the process with continual improvement daily!

So grateful for each of you that have walked with us in the journey.
Much love,
Kate and Jeff
