The Brophy/Xavier Class of 1988 would like to share a beautiful story of our dear friend Jay Moore who was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011 and has been dealing with the complications from the cancer and liver transplant for the past few years.
Jay is a loving husband of 14 years to Kelly and a father to 4 beautiful children ~ Abby, Maggie and Sean (6th grade at St. Francis Grade School) and Finely (1st grade St. Francis Grade School). Some of us have known Jay since our childhood and others had the blessing of becoming friends with Jay in high school. Jay has a heart of gold and is always there for his family and friends.
In 1989 Jay joined the army reserves and served in Deser Storm for 6 months. During basic training, he was required to have immunizations by jet guns. In 2003, Kelly and Jay learned he had contracted hepatitis C during the immunization process. Hepatitis C has the ability to cause liver cancer. In 2011 Jay leaned he had cancer, started treatement, and the road to receive transplant began.
It was May of 2014 when cancer return and a transplant was needed as soon as possible. In August prayers were answered and Jay received a liver transplant. A month later he received a transplant revision to repair his bile duct system.
Since then Jay has encountered many complications due to the transplant. But his love for his family has kept his spirits high during this time.
In January of 2015, Jay's doctor learned the cancer had spread into the lymph nodes located in his chest, mediastinum. Over the next two months, he received radiation for 3 weeks at a time which shrunk the lymph nodes. In June radiation was completed and he began chemotherapy over the next month. But due to the severity of the side effects, treatment was stopped.
In October, routine labs showed that tumor markers were increasing. A month later a PET scan revealed the cancer to be active and growing in the mediastinum lymph node again but no additional cancer was found. This was rare and a blessing! Jay and Kelly met with the cardio thoracic surgeon to determine the best treatment. With guidance from the surgeon, they decided to remove the lymph nodes and begin a lower dose of radiation once Jay was healed from surgery.
The surgeon only agreed to perform the surgery because the cancer had not spread anywhere else. Therefore, Jay had a pre surgery PET scan on December 28. The scan showed 2 new nodules, one on each lung. Surgery was scheduled for the next day. Before the surgeo would remove the lymph node from his chest, she wanted to first remove the new nodule on the right lung with the pathologist on hand to determine if the nodule was cancerous or not. If the nodules was cancerous, the surgery would not continue. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened. She also confirmed there are 2 rumors now in Jay's left lung
Jay came home to his family on January 1, 2016.
You may not be aware but once liver cancer spreads outside of the liver, there is no cure. Liver cancer doesn't respond well to chemo and it is an agressive cancer. Once patients are diagonsed with stage 4, the disease is usually fatal within 6-12 months
Many of you have asked how you can help. As the Brophy/Xavier Class of 1988, we are looking to create an educational fund for Jay and Kelly's 4 beautiful children; Abby, Maggie, Sean and Finley. We are asking for donations to help with their future education. This blessing will be seen throughout their life.
Also, we are also asking for something far more important than financial support. The Brophy/Xavier Class of 1988 humbly requests you include Jay and his family in your daily prayers. Prayers for strength, love, and peace. These prayers are your blessings to Jay and his family. Thanks be to God.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love and support for our dear friend Jay and his family. He is a remarkable son, husband, father and friend!
