JKDC is campaigning for your help to keep our VISION alive and moving FORWARD. Funding for the arts has declined, and it is now more crucial than ever to gain support through individual donations and financial assistance.
WHAT is our VISION / Who is JKDC
JKing Dance Company(JKDC), founded in 2008, based in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, is an all-female ensemble, increasingly advancing in recognition as ‘...undeniably emotional, unabashedly raw, and most importantly real,' (Jenny Thompson, NY Dance Examiner). Our vision is in sharing work that engages audience’s minds and emotions through dance and storytelling; bringing life to topics left unresolved, personal and social, to invite new perspectives, with the hopes of opening up dialogue, where there was none.
WHAT we CREATE
Artistic Director, King’s choreography delves into delicate topics, personal perceptions, and global events, through the ardor and athleticism of contemporary dance, and striking dramatic adaptations.The theatrical, technical, funny, emotional and intricate quality of her choreography is geared to stimulate the mind and hearts of all ages to enjoy and be a part of.
WHAT we ACCOMPLISHED
JKDC received Fiscal Sponsorship with The Field in 2010 and has presented at over 25 NY venues - Highlights include: APAP 2015- Jazz at Lincoln Center -Booking Dance, Gibney, Salvatore Theater, MMAC, Brooklyn Dance Festival, DIXON Place, NYC Children’s Museum of Art , Tribute to ‘Luigi’, WHITE WAVE’S DUMBO and COOL NY, Grounds for Sculpture and more; Touring to IL, MA, NJ, VT, and our international debut at HIGH FEST International Performing Arts Festival -Yerevan, Armenia. King has self-produced four JKDC seasons at The Ailey Citigroup Theater in 2012 - 2015. It is through these performances, King has offered opportunities to young emerging dancers to rehearse and perform with JKDC dancers.
WHAT is DEVELOPING
JKDC has jumped right into our fall season, creating new works - one in which was recently performed at White Wave’s DUMBO Dance Festival in October. We have been working hard, preparing for our showcases at APAP NYC 2017 in January. Showcasing at two very different venues offers organizations an option to view our work in an intimate setting at Manhattan Movement Arts Center under Construction Company Dance Portfolio and at a larger setting at Jazz at Lincoln Center / The Appel room as part of Booking Dance Festival.
WHAT are our GOALS
Expanding upon our ability to continue to create new works, present in future showcases, broaden our travels in the US and Abroad to share our vision of opening up conversations within varied communities and Universities; Explore collaborations with other artists and continue to offer young dancers the opportunities to learn, work and perform along side professional dancers. JKDC will further bring global attention to our work and vision through showcasing at APAP; initiating dialogue, to begin building these connections.
WHAT we NEED
JKDC budgeted funds to cover our initial invite to showcase at APAP. Upon receiving an additional invite we began working hard to secure funds of $1,400, enabling us to participate in the second showcase. BUT we still need your help! To maximize the benefits showcasing at APAP can bring, JKDC must secure additional funding to be able to materialize the goals we have in place by the beginning of January. The following are our expected expenses going into 2017:
Renewal of JKDC's Sponsored Artist/membership with THE FIELD * - $250.
Membership offers our contributors a tax write off when donating to JKDC through The FIELD,
Subsidized studio rentals
Access to MFTA (Material for the Arts) Free fabric, office supplies
Grant application reviews and guidance and business workshops
Artists Fees - $ 3,500
Videographer - $600
Photographer - $250
Studio rentals/rehearsal $1800 min. $10 - $18 per hr -once a wk every month - 4 - 6 hr. intervals.
Insurance - Event/ Liability - $400 This protects us against damage etc for studio and venue rentals
Graphic design/Printing - $250 - Design fees and printing of postcards for APAP, business cards, press kits
Costumes/Design - $560 (for our newest work School of Chairs)
Submissions - $100 - For future performance opportunities
Your donation of $70 pays for a dancer's costume, $10 gives us an hour of rehearsal time.
