Commodore Perry Global Initiative

The Japan America Society of Rhode Island is proud to announce the launch of the Commodore C. Perry Initiative.  The goal of the initiative is to create long-term US-Japan friendships, primarily by sending Rhode Island high school students to Japan for language and cultural immersion trips.

Our Plan is to send two students and one teacher/chaperone every year.  The experience will change the students' perspectives toward the world. Seeing is believing and even in our modern society where you can learn about foreign culture instantly through the Internet, living with a Japanese family and seeing their day-to-day lives unfold is a powerful and influential experience.  Most importantly those who are fortunate to have had such an experience will find they have created lifetime friendships.  There is no better way to teach and cultivate peace among youth in the world.

All Rhode Island high school Juniors and Seniors are eligible for this trip.  The attached You Tube video shows how proud the students are to be working with and supporting this initiative.

Thank you in advance for your support!
