Be a Part of Hoa Aina O Makaha Farm

Hoa Aina O Makaha, Land Shared in Friendship, (http://www.hoaainaomakaha.org/) is a small non-profit farm situated in Makaha, the western most end of Oahu, Hawaii.  Since 1979, it has been a place of refuge for many and, through the years, has evolved into the learning resource center that now welcomes more than 4,000 guests each year. Endearingly referred to as "Mr. Gigi" by everyone who has visited Makaha Farm, Hoa Aina O Makaha's co-founder has brought his vision to life in the span of 38 years and created a safe haven fostering hope, peace, love, and tolerance for all through his firm belief in the goodness of people and the need he sees to provide a support system so young minds and hearts can thrive in challenging situations and grow to their full potential.

Everyone who visits Makaha Farm becomes a part of the universal harmony in caring for the environment where nature is much more than just the plants and trees. It is the people, animals, mountains, and oceans
that make up our surroundings and, as people come together and help to maintain the beauty and the bounties of the land, they contribute to the harmony in their respective communities.  Caring for the land reminds everyone of the need to take care in nurturing themselves and each other to restore the harmony between mind, body, and heart. In caring for something, people see things in a different way and Hoa Aina O Makaha provides the setting for everyone to feel heard and appreciated as they share their experiences.

We are a non-profit offering most of our services free to a low-income community. Hoa Aina O Makaha is a special place that brings peace, joy, and hope to everyone who comes.  Through its legacy programs, the Farm hosts children and families from across the globe, with an emphasis on our neighbors within the Waianae Coast community. Students, K-6, from neighboring Makaha Elementary School participate in our Na Keiki O Ka Aina program.  The Farm setting allows for the children to be overcome with a sense of awe.  With their eyes they experience the beauty of the new plants, the flowers, the seeds, the animals, the solar energy. With their hands, the children prepare the garden, the seeds, and weed, always feeling the soil. The children’s hearts give life to each activity as they express their enthusiasm and share what they have seen, what they have built and grown, what they have learned, and what the experiences mean to them.

Similarly, our Ke Ala program allows students from visiting schools to see the beauty and feel the serenity as they explore Hoa Aina O Makaha while the hands-on activities of planting, harvesting, and feeding the animals provide each child with the tactile experience. As they reflect on the visual and physical aspects, their eyes and hands connect to their hearts and their experiences are no longer just about what they’ve seen and done; instead, it is the story, shared from their hearts, of the resulting emotions of their experiences and this creates and promotes peaceful communities.

Our third legacy program, Malama Makaha Container Gardening, was created to provide the families of students a venue where they could re-connect with nature while planting vegetables and fruits that can be used by the whole family, bringing generations together to care for this portable garden and, in doing so, improving the relationships amongst family members. It is also a healing experience; healing of the body through nutritious food and healing of the heart through caring.

With the expiration of our 25 year lease with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu,  we are embarking on a new beginning filled with many opportunities while remaining true to our mission and we invite you to be a part of this exciting journey.  The funds raised will go towards all farm related expenses including building improvements and operating costs.

Many who come to Hoa Aina O Makaha feel a sense of peace.  This feeling was best captured by Mr. Gigi's notion that the peacefulness we feel is the energy and spirit of everyone who has walked this land before us, those who have cried and found solace here, and those who have shared on this land.  Your help today will ensure Hoa Aina O Makaha exists for future generations. Every donation will be recognized in a special way at the Farm in perpetuity.

We invite you to visit and become a part of the Makaha Farm family.
