Dear Family, Friends, Citadel Parents, and Alumni
My name is Cadet Blake Heffington, Citadel Class of 2020, currently studying Criminal Justice. I’m active in the Gospel Choir, and am also a member of the Regimental Band despite being in BRAVO Company. I am very excited to be at the Citadel, and being able to further my education as a member of the Corps of Cadets has always been a dream of mine.Unfortunately, I am in need of assistance in order to continue my studies. Many of you know that I lost my father in August 2017 to esophageal cancer. He was diagnosed in February of 2016, during my knob year, which made an already challenging year even more difficult. Despite these hardships, I made it through the year, and I had never seen my father so proud of me, and it was his vision to see me complete my education here at The Citadel.To make matters even more difficult, my mother was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer just seven months after my dad’s passing. My mother spent more than 17 years working from home providing daycare services. However, she was forced to quit this endeavor to take care of my father full time during his illness. Now, dealing with the treatments for her own illness (including a mastectomy and the removal of 20 lymph nodes in May 2018), she is still unable to resume her work.Through it all, I have persevered in my studies and remained focused on my goals. These goals all hinge upon graduating from The Citadel with my class in 2020, which was also my father’s final wish for me. In order to continue my studies in January, I’m reaching out for financial assistance. It is my hope that you could find it in your heart to contribute so that I can continue my studies with my second family at The Citadel. Although my family believes in helping others whenever we can, we are not ones to ask for help quickly, so this appeal is difficult to make. However, it is very important to me to be able to continue my studies here, and I’m hoping that you’ll support my dreams by enabling me to stay at The Citadel.
