Help Rioch Transform Young Lives

Donation protected
In 2009, Rioch's son was shot and stabbed while in school. The reason given by the perpetrator for attacking her son was that he “ hated him for having two parents at home." Rioch did not want revenge and forgave her son’s attacker. Then, in the same year, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

8 years later, a free training programme she created has helped young people from 17 of the poorest boroughs in London gain work experience, internships, traineeships and jobs in the TV industry.

So You Wanna Be In TV? is Rioch's social enterprise, which has created a safe space for young people in London who are in need of guidance, support and skills to enable social mobility and employment.

Despite the considerable challenges she has faced, Rioch a former TV Researcher, along with volunteer broadcast professionals has created a free and welcoming programme in the community to help financially disadvantaged young people interested in a TV career.

Over 2,700 young people have benefitted so far through access to free employability skills, mentors, training programmes and networking events directly with the TV industry.

Their free programme helps young people off the streets, support those who are in social care, youth offenders, the homeless, those at risk of being radicalised, former gang members, the disabled, ex-offenders, those not in education, training or school and graduates.

These vital free training programmes, including career fairs, industry days and job placement programmes come with costs.

I was contacted by Rioch who does all of this for nothing and asked to become a volunteer. Once candidates graduate, they need long-term mentoring and help to attend career fairs attended by industry, leading to paid internships and job opportunities, plus somewhere in the community where all this can happen under one roof. Some attendees return to unsafe environments as there isn't enough funding to ensure ongoing mentoring.

75 thousand pounds is needed to create a series of pop up hubs across 17 of the poorest London boroughs, which will need to be fully equipped, insured, secured and fully staffed with access to mentors, trainers and masterclasses. There will also be industry events where young people can meet potential employers face-to-face.

Like most people I don’t have 75 thousand pounds but I believe together we can help Rioch to continue her fantastic programme.

Changing Lives. Changing TV

“I attended the 'So You Wanna Be In TV' session. I had given up work at to become a carer for my grandfather
and when I attended the session I found myself at a crossroads, I had no idea how to start a career in TV. I started a 6 week paid internship with ITV Sport in November and it was the best thing I have EVER done. I'd like to say a big THANK YOU! because without you none of this would have happened for me.

I know our young people will not mean the same to you as they do to Rioch, but I am seeing many young people who feel without hope, having their lives transformed.

Rioch would be so grateful for your support and generosity, so anything you can do to help, no matter how small, will make a difference to a young person's life. Please help Rioch to transform more young people's lives.

Help spread the word!

THANK YOU.
