Bring Groups to Our High Schools!

What's Up? Wellness Checkups is a suicide prevention program being offered at Nevada County high schools to screen the emotional health of teens, then support their connection to mental health & wellness services in the community. These one-time, free and confidential screens are being offered in all of the NJUHSD & TTUSD high schools and Forest Charter. From Spring 2013 through Spring 2018 we have screened 1736 students, almost a third of whom were struggling with significant mental health symptoms. We helped connect 387 of those students and their families with community services to help support their emotional health. We are now screening through the 2018-19 school year, with a focus on screening 9th graders, but all grades are offered the screen upon parent request.

THE GOOD NEWS:
We have secured screening volunteers for our program. This will help immensely.  We are continuing our mindfulness skills groups, a poetry for self expression group, boys groups, a music support workshop and a movement/somatic group.

OUR CHALLENGE:
We are seeing more and more need in our schools for groups to support teens who are struggling, and we need support to continue funding these groups. We recently have seen the need for more groups at all sites and a Spanish speaking support group for NU students new to the country and are hoping to make both of these happen.

We are raising funds for two areas of need:

1) To pay for our group faciliatators insurance, stipends and other costs for groups in the schools. We would like to expand our group offerings to meet the needs of more schools.

2) A scholarship/subsidy base to award to teens in need of support that come from families with extremely limited funds and who could not otherwise qualify for health insurance. Funds will be utilized toward therapy, groups or emergency services, and for our program to offer continued support for families in navigating these connections. Families who request funding will be responsible for a portion of their cost, but our raised monies will help offset the rest, hopefully leading to a more successful long term therapeutic connection. To qualify families provide us with a description of their need, as well as a demonstrated commitment to ongoing treatment for their teen.

We do have a local nonprofit, NAMI of Nevada County, who has stepped in as our financial "go-between," meaning that donations are TAX-DEDUCTIBLE! Good news for those of you who would like to write them off on taxes.
