My name is Becca Hazlett and I am a teacher at Willow Brook Elementary School, in the Oklahoma City Public Schools district.
During my first year of teaching, I noticed our students had very limited opportunities to participate in sports in their community; this is due in large part to money. Many of our kids lack basic skills and knowledge in popular sports such as football, basketball, soccer and baseball. This can further increase the opportunity gap our students face as they head to middle school without the skills necessary to try out for an athletic team.
Seeing this inspired me to start After School Athletic Teams (AAT) for students in grades 1-5. This is a free program that teaches students about a variety of team sports such as football, basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball, softball, and volleyball. Our students will leave the program with knowledge in these sports, as well as key qualities for being a successful athlete and team player. Qualities such as sportsmanship, teamwork, communication, dedication, discipline, and leadership will help our kids succeed on the playing field as well as in other aspects of their daily lives in the classroom and at home.
As you can see in the video, our kids love this program. However, in order to make this a lasting experience for them, we need equipment. Willow Brook lacks some of the basic athletic resources that other schools have access to (a gym, basketball hoops, nets, balls, etc.). We are a Title I school, which means funding for these resources is incredibly limited. AAT is in need of a lot of equipment in order to make this program a success. No one deserves this more than our kids.
