Hello Everyone,
I have never done anything like this before, so I thought that I would give it a try. My name is Kai Payne, and I am junior at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. It is my mission to go out and see the world, learn about different cultures, live outside of my comfort zone, and immerse myself completely in all the world has to offer, and thanks to Bates, I can begin that process now. Every year, "over 60% of juniors and a smaller number of other students and other classes study abroad." I would love to be a part of that percentage and start my travels studying abroad for a semester in Budapest, Hungary. As a History major, Hungary would be an excellent destination for me to study abroad. Hungary, which recently ended its communist dictatorship style of government in 1989, is filled with stark contrasts to that of the United States, but has clearly been striving towards perfecting their democratic parliamentary republic which formed shortly after the end of its communist reign. As a History major, Hungary's transition to its new form of government would be fascinating to study and would give me insight on how government changes in the modern age. Budapest which I will be specifically studying in if selected has great Central European architecture and is highlighted in its Castles, Universities, and Historical buildings throughout the city. Also, even though Hungary is a part of Europe, it is not yet on the Euro which would make for an interesting study on Hungary's economics and its contribution to Europe. If selected, Budapest would be a great alternative to the more tourist visited western European countries and will still grant me the opportunity to travel to neighboring European countries to get a more cultured experience.
As many current students, past students, and people who love to travel know, traveling can be extremely expensive. Bates does a great job covering most of the tuition, but in most cases they do not cover all of it. My household consists of just my mother and I, and she tries her hardest to provide everything she possibly can and I love her every day for it. However, working with one salary and paying a New York City mortgage as well as helping me through school is pretty taxing on just my mother, and I would love to raise money for my trip in order to spare her the extra expense. A round trip trip to Hungary would also be around $1,000.00 and meals and personal expenses will also need to be covered. This summer, I worked to help save money for the trip and I have managed to save some money for my trip. I am asking for your help to raise $2,500.00 to cover the rest of my airfare and help cover my personal expenses and meals which I believe that I can budget.
