Hearts Mend Hearts

The mission of Hearts Mend Hearts is to bring comfort and healing to individuals in the Charleston community in the aftermath of a tragedy or challenge through the use of art therapy, offered at no cost, to community members of all ages.  Hearts Mend Hearts was originally founded to bring emotional relief after the tragic shooting at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, SC.  While therapists and volunteers continue to address the emotional aftermath of the shooting, Hearts Mend Hearts is currently expanding to reach people with any challenge or tragedy they are processing.  Sessions are led by liscensed therapists as well as community volunteers.  

Pictured below is a mandala created during an art therapy session regarding the tragic shooting at Mother Emanuel in Charleston, SC.  It shows a mother and daughter walking to church with dark clouds and rain symbolizing the heaviness, fear, and anxiety associated with returning to church.  To the left, the artist hears the words, "Don't go!" and "Not safe anymore."  To the right, the artist decides not to let the anxiety win, but to return to church which he/she labels "Safe Place" and symbolizes this safety through blue skies and sunshine.  Thanks to art therapy, this participant was able to work through her fears and anxieties of returning to church.
