Harmon Academy 2017-2018

$600 of $1,500 goal

Raised by 8 people in 14 months

Hello again family and friends! The school year is looming larger than ever this year, with many challenges and new opportunities.

This year, America will be starting kindergarten, Axel will be in 2nd grade, Elvis will be in 5th grade! {This marks his last year in elementary school! I cannot believe it!} and  Vegas will be in 10th grade!

Bea will just be a cute reminder of how fortunate we are to have so much time together as a family!

Elvis and Vegas will both be participating in local school music programs, which they are looking forward to very much.

Vegas will also be attending our local high school for four academic classes in addition to music classes.  This year he will also be playing with the Portland Youth Philharmonic, which is a goal he set three years ago for himself, and we are so excited for him!

As many of you know, we moved over the last year {again~and hopefully the last time for....ever} Tim is still pastoring a small church in Northeast Portland, and working part-time at Western Seminary.  I am holding down the fort, planning school curriculum, cleaning the house, working in the yard, and sometimes getting away to the local nursery to look at new plants.

This year, I was torn about doing a fundraiser, but there are many practical considerations that helped make my decision.

We have music lessons to pay for.
We have co-op classes to pay for.
We drive kids to classes all the time, which takes gas.
Vegas needs a tux shirt.
The kids all need school supplies, and books.
Our markers wear out, shoes wear out, coats get small, and life provides unexpected costs just for good measure.

So, if you have any of the items on our wish list or are able to contribute in any way to our fundraiser, we would appreciate it so much. Our last few years would not have been possible without all the support we have received from you. Thank you!!

Hey folks! Heres a quick update on our school year. The first quarter is officially over, and everyone is doing great! We are taking a little break over the holiday weekend to plan out our next 6 weeks of school. That takes us all the way into the new year, which feels crazy. Our go fund me goal was $1500 this year, and so far we have raised one-third of that. For anyone who is wondering why we even need to raise money, here's the quick answer: education isn't free, and homeschooling isn't funded by taxes. Our family operates on a tiny budget, and all your help is a huge blessing. Thank you for your encouragement! Every time someone sends a note, or an email, we are so thrilled, so please! Write! ;)

Coming up:
Vegas was accepted into the All-State orchestra, which is a group comprised of all the top players in the state. We are so proud of him! He has several performances over the winter, so please email me if you want to attend one!

Elvis is loving 5th grade band, and is doing great in all his subjects.

Axel has joined the PYP double bass class, and is doing really well! I think we have another bass player in the family!

America is doing great, reading more, and drawing all the time. She is definitely an artist.

Our fundraising goal will pay for Vegas's all-state registration, lessons for Elvis, a bass rental for Axel, field trips, and basic school supplies. Thank you for putting up with these updates, and for being our dear friends and family.

Sincerely, Shelley

Hi guys, I just posted a little update on our first week of school. Thank you for all your help! We have nearly all the supplies we need, a few more books are coming in the mail today. The rest of our goal will go to class fees and lessons for each of the kids. If we are able to, we will upgrade our school computer as well. We are so thankful for your support!

We are 1/3 of the way to our goal for this year, which is pretty fantastic! Most of our books have been ordered already. We are still working on gathering office/school supplies, and paying for classes.

Vegas needs a new Tux shirt for all his performances this year, as well as new dress shoes. He literally wore his last pair out, with so many concerts last year!

Thank you all so much~ this year seems a little daunting to me, and all the support has been a comfort. Just knowing you are out there, cheering us on is a huge help!

We are officially one week away from the first day of school, the last minute frenzy of lunch bags and notebooks has begun.

Much love, Shelley

Piece by piece we are putting together the academic puzzle that is 2017-2018. I've begun writing syllabuses for each book, which really helps me manage the mental load of all we need to get done.

The boys have a desk in their room now, something Elvis has wanted for years! There are even two separate book compartments in it- one for each of them.

We have an ancient iPad 1- the very first that ever came out. We bought it when Vegas was about 7. It can't do anything, other than run some very old games- but I am hoping to find some fun learning games for Meri to use for 'computer time' when the boys are busy.

Needless to say- we are busy nesting for the school year. Thank your for your help, friendship, and love- we appreciate you all so very much.
