Slaughterhouse Survivors Harbin
We are a small team of foreigners and Chinese citizens, dedicated to rescuing as many dogs as possible from the slaughterhouse, dog meat trade, and general abuse, in China.
We are Harbin Slaughterhouse Survivors, based in Harbin, North-East China. Many of our dogs are from Harbin, and the neighbouring cities, but we do also have a lot of dogs coming to us from other places in China where there isn't perhaps the same rescue network (it is a big country!).
Some dogs come from govenment 'shelters', where they they fight for their life everyday. These 'shelters' rarely offer enough food, water or shelter and dog are dying of starvation and illnesses everyday in these locations. As you can imagine with 1000+ starving dogs inhabiting a small enclosure together, distemper, pneumonia, and parvo virus spread like wildfire, to name just a few.
The dead bodies of the dogs are left amongst the living. Sadly, on more than one occassion, our Chinese rescue volunteers have left the shelter with the aim to return and pick up more dogs for us (due to funding and transport restrictions, we can only rescue a few at a time, and Chinese citizens have to go for us as foreigners are rarely welcomed), and have returned to find corpses of the dogs we had previously hoped to rescue only a few days later.
These dogs have been given to these 'shelters' from slaughter houses, dog meat traders, and by rescuers who have no idea what actually happens to the dogs at this 'shelter'. The worst part of it? The majority of these dogs were beloved pets, who were once stolen by dog meat traffickers. This means, that they are extremely friendly, loving and trusting towards humans, even after all they have been through.
Many of our dogs have also been abandoned (sometimes on our clinic's doorstep) with very serious injuries. We have have animals come to us abandoned with completely broken legs, a broken jaw, a broken spine, skin diseases, eye problems, to just name a few.
So what do we do with these donations?
The cost of saving and treating the rescued dogs is very high. Every month we have bills for surgeries, neuterings, general medication for viruses and ailments, trasportation and supplies. We are fotunate to have a very good team of vets who have been working and supporting everything we do, and who offer us a very generous discount of 30%.
