We are very sad to report that there will not be a fireworks show this year.
Less than 50% of the required money was raised through just 48 donations (compared to 144 donors last year). It seems there just isnʻt enough community interest this year. The money already donated will carry over to next year, in hopes of reviving the tradition and incorporating a larger event based around the fireworks.
Aloha, and have a happy Thanksgiving.
Three easy ways to donate if you haven't already:
1. Online at www.gofundme.com/hanafireworks
2. Via regular mail to PO Box 856 in Hana
3. Collection jars at Hasegawa Store, Hana Gas Station and Hana Ranch Store.
Aloha When The Hana Business Council was asked to continue the sponsorship of the Hana Fireworks Committee following the tragic loss of Carl & Rae Lindquist they created "The Hana Fireworks Memorial Fund" In Memory of Carl and Rae Lindquist.
In light of this continued effort we are asking for your support for one of Hana's most cherished traditions: The New Years' Eve Fireworks Show.
If every PO Box holder (each family) in Hana donated just $20, that would be enough to guarantee the show. This year, the HBC is required to pay a 50% deposit on or before October 1. Without this deposit, the show will not be reserved and it will be much less festive in Hana on New Yearsʻ eve. Whatever money is raised will carry over to the following year.
Although the show comes with a hefty price tag, when shared by the community, it is a small price to pay. Thanks to our friends at Hawai'i Pyrotechnics Inc. the price of the show has not gone up much over the years. Celebrating the arrival of the New Year in this festive fashion has been a Hana tradition for more than 60 years, and it is a much anticipated event which also symbolizes the sense of unity and kokua which those who live and visit here feel for one another. In this sense, welcoming the New Year as a community has come to have special significance far beyond the entertainment value of the fireworks themselves. Gathering along the road in front of the hotel to celebrate the New Year with a midnight fireworks display, the aural backdrop of honking horns and laughing children testifying that for this moment troubles, doubts and differences have been put aside and that hope is in the air.
Please help us continue this important tradition and honor Carl & Rae Lindquist by donating today: Send your check or money order made out to the Hana Fireworks Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 856, Hana, Hawai'i 96713. Every donation, no matter what size, will be gratefully accepted and appreciated.
