Paradise Lost:
A silent tragedy is unfolding across the Big Island of Hawaii. Little Fire Ant (LFA) are now established in every district and continue to spread!
LFA are classified as one of the world's worst invasive species. The little amber-colored ants are arboreal so that they infest three-dimensionally. They inflict a painful sting and leave nasty itchy welts that threaten our ability to enjoy our homes, yards, parks, and forests. They blind our pets and livestock, attack native wildlife birds, bees and turtles. They greatly inhibit agricultural field work when infested. Our very well-being is at risk.
The entire island chain is also at high risk prompting the Hawaii State Legislature to declare invasive species the "Single Greatest Threat To Hawai'i's Economy and Natural Environment, And To The Health And Lifestyle Of Hawai'i's People." Despite this serious advisory awareness remains low.
