McAuley Residence is a comprehensive, evidence-based program for women, with or without children, seeking recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. It offers a holistic approach to recovery, including physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness, financial literacy, parent coaching, career development and education counseling. Started in 1988, it has served more than 400 women. It is currently at capacity, serving 15 women and their 17 combined children, all under the age of seven. These women share with one another a history of substance abuse and, in addition, have typically experienced one or more instances of homelessness,  trafficking, mental health issues, or incarceration.

The program has helped women like Tania Margate reclaim their lives. After a woman decided to end her life by jumping in front of Tania’s car, Tania progressed further down a path of drug use. At the time she was a nurse, working long days and scheduling her shifts so she would have two to three days off—enough time so she could continue to use drugs and still work. She eventually lost her job, was reported to the Maine State Board of Nursing as a danger to patients, had a series of arrests, and was in and out of jail. Her boyfriend at the time was in jail, and she was living in his apartment with no heat or electricity.

In October 2013, she was accepted into the McAuley Residence program where she spent almost two years. Today she is grounded and has learned techniques to interact with others and maturely cope with life’s challenges. She has a good job and volunteers at McAuley Residence helping the women with basic cooking skills.  She recently applied to have her nurse’s license reinstated, and has lost 50 pounds so that her “outside looks as good as her inside feels.”

McAuley Residence is the only program in Maine that allows women in recovery to have their children live with them. The program receives no federal funds and is operated solely on private donations. Your support will assist the women with childcare, daycare, education expense, counseling, and daily living needs.
