Girlfriend In A Stoma

Donation protected
Dear Family and Friends, I am writing to ask for your help … Just two and a half months before my sweet future daughter in-law, Elsie Lopez’s wedding, to our son Michael, Elsie was admitted to Sharp Memorial Hospital with suspicion of colon cancer after an emergency room CT scan revealed a 3.5 inch mass. Upon further investigation Elsie was diagnosed with aggressive, stage 3, colon cancer.

The aftershock of this completely new and terrifying territory Elsie and our son Michael  are about to journey through comes just 1 year after another serious illness Elsie is battling ...

Cone-rod dystrophy (CRD), a rare genetic eye disorder that affect the light sensitive cells of the retina called the cones and rods. With its rarity even more devastating news is that this condition leads to progressive vision loss, legal blindness and disability.  Currently, there is no therapy that stops the evolution of the disease or restores the vision, and the visual prognosis is poor. Management aims at slowing down the degenerative process, treating the complications and helping Elsie to cope with the psychological impact of blindness. .

33 years old, young, healthy and no family history of colon cancer. We are all bewildered, both families sitting together in her hospital room, our tears flowed, and we embraced, trying to absorb it all.

Elsie, within hours, underwent, a sigmoidoscopy for biopsy,   Surgery for colostomy and stoma placement and a few days later another surgery for colostomy stoma malfunction. Treatment involves a 6 month regime of radiation and chemo with resulting surgery to remove the tumor and further chemo to prevent recurrence.  She was told she cannot work or drive during this time and will likely be too sick to attend her wedding.

Elsie is meeting her battles as best she can with hope, courage and the love and support of her family and friends. Like anything else Elsie does in life, she gives it her very best. Her witty nature and contagious laugh we all know and love still pervades. I watched with heartfelt compassion as she is fighting her cancer and vision dystrophy with incredible grace, hope and courage .

Elsie has always been incredibly generous and altruistic. Her young bio reads like a woman of substance and purpose who views incessantly that all human beings, animals and the environment deserve respect and dignity and should be treated as such.

An advocate in every facet of her young life, always a giver, she has served the community in a magnitude of capacities, including; a human services professional within victim advocacy for rape/domestic violence, families in crises, and victim sponsorship during court proceedings.

A civic activist and demonstrator who is a promoter of legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, to include animal liberation, her view that sentient beings are deserving of respect and extol kindness and compassion as utmost virtues to end suffering. Most recently her position as an executive assistant for the humane society speaks volumes.

She will tell you how much more she gets from this work than she gives. She is not used to being on the receiving end and has been overwhelmed by the love and support she has been shown since learning of her diagnosis.

Out of tragedy can come inspiration? It can harvest acts, and deeds, and abilities beyond ones expectations.  We are committed to raise $40,000 dollars to support the cost attributed to Elsie’s cancer treatment and her Cone-rod dystrophy care.  Would you please join me in this effort?

We hope that your avenue to making a difference in Elsie’s fight, can be to provide a financial contribution.  The mean total colon cancer cost is estimated 29,196 dollars out of pocket, add in miss wages, from time off work, living expenses and inability to drive and her expenses continue to rise.

To date her expenses currently are $1500.00 out of pocket co-pay for pet scan, $500.00 a month for medical insurance and further co-pays for radiation and chemo treatment as well as ostomy supplies and transportation expenses.

Please make any contribution either a secure online donation via (this site) or by sharing this link on your social media to help spread the word.

We are all grateful for any contribution.  Please help us to get Elsie the best care and treatment to heal her beautiful self.  God Bless.
