Gary's Kids Memorial Fund

It’s with a heavy heart that we inform you that a dear member of the Midwest Horse Fair family, Gary Steers, passed away Friday, August 14, after a 56-day battle with brain cancer.  Gary was a colleague, mentor and simply a friend who touched many lives throughout the entire U.S. and we all will miss him.

Gary had a lifelong passion for horses and everything to do with horses. Gary channeled that passion into a successful business, Steers Tack. The business evolved many times over the years from buying and selling horses, horse trailers and horse tack of all kinds. Gary worked 7 days a week and was always on the phone checking in with his buddies or looking for a way to make a deal. Gary had friends and business acquaintances scattered throughout the United States and would often call them when traveling just to check in with them. He spent thousands of hours on the phone, and amazingly knew everyone’s number by memory. Most weekends Gary could be found at an auction or a tack swap somewhere in the Midwest. Gary’s son, Scott, has listened and learned from his father and successfully learned the horse business. Steers Tack will continue in the tradition of excellence, value and quality they are known for throughout the country.

A tireless worker, Gary has been involved in the shaping of the Wisconsin Horse Council and the Midwest Horse Fair for the past 30-plus years. Gary was instrumental in bringing the Midwest Horse Fair to what it is today. Gary’s final years were spent directly mentoring the Midwest Horse Fair team, involved in the planning and building of the new world-class pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center and of course sharing his love and knowledge of the horse business to anyone who took a moment to listen.

To all who had the opportunity to listen, work and be around Gary, we are richer for those experiences and have memories that will be cherished for many years to come.

Gary is survived by his wife, two sons and five grandchildren.

In typical Gary-fashion, his final request was that no fuss be made upon his passing and that no one “waste money” on flowers. He he did not want any visitation or funeral.  Gary did agree to allow us to set up a charitable fund in his honor called “Gary’s Kids”, with all proceeds going toward enriching the experience of children at the Midwest Horse Fair.

No one ever really dies if they took the time to leave us fond memories; while Gary may have left us physically, the memories of the great man he was will remain for lifetimes to come.
