G. Valmont Thomas - Cancer Fight

$54,148 of $55,000 goal

Created August 25, 2017
On July 8, G. Valmont Thomas was dressed and ready to perform at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.  It was the beginning of a marathon  day. Falstaff in Henry IV, Part 1 and Falstaff again in Henry IV, Part 2, making him the rare actor to perform Falstaff in all 3 Shakespeares, as well as one of very few Black actors to do so.  The "hat trick."  He did it.

Despite cancer, despite pain, despite the toll the disease was taking on him.  He continued to fight and to perform.

But cancer is patient.  And insidious.  And it would not allow him to perform the next night.  Or the night after that.  Or any night since.

And now, G. Val needs our help.

Cancer is expensive. Drugs, medical supplies, doctor visits, insurance premiums, more drugs, the list goes on and on. OSF, and in particular a few special members of the staff, have been incredibly generous with time, transportation, daily visits and more.

But, G. Val's contract expires at the end of October, and does not renew until next April.  We, his friends and family, will need to pitch in. His “Ashland family” has taken the lion's share of the burden, but they cannot be his sole support. Can you help?

What we need:  Money.

For:
- Medical co-pays and insurance premiums
- Rent & Utilities
- Day to day expenses:  food, transportation, etc.
- Home health care/nurses
- Fighting cancer without a paycheck

G. Val says that Ashland feels like home now. He has amazing community support, as well as a team of doctors familiar with his medical history. He would like to stay in Ashland, but he needs our help.

Please donate today, and pass this on to any friends of G Val who would like to help.

If you are in Ashland, you already know that visits need to be limited and the freezer is full of casseroles. This cash gift is truly the best way to help G. Val at this time.

If you would like to send G. Val a message and/or receive weekly notifications of his progress, sign up for CaringBridge here.  Here

Thank you to everyone who sends G. Val good energy, prayers, or keeps him in your thoughts. He has given us all so much over the years, and it is a blessing to be able to give something back.

"I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks."
   -  William Shakespeare (Twelfth Night, Act 3, Scene 3)

UPDATE: Because we've had such a wonderful reponse in just a few short days (and because medical care is expensive and future costs unknown), we are dreaming bigger, and have increased our goal. Thank you, G. Val supporters!

G. Valmont Thomas 12/15/59 - 12/18/17

As some of you may be aware, G. Val passed away on December 18 at approximately 5:00 am in Ashland, Oregon. He had three loving friends by his side. They recited Shakespeare, played music for him and helped him to have a very peaceful release.

I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your kindness and generosity. G. Val was absolutely blown away by how many people cared for and about him. I believe that knowing the number of people contributing to this fund helped him truly understand how much he was loved.

When we passed the goal of $50,000, I called G. Val and told him. I also mentioned that he had over 560 individual donors. He paused, and then said, "Wow. That's almost enough to fill the Bowmer." (The Angus Bowmer Theatre at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.) Naturally, that became the next goal.

Yesterday, we achieved our 600th donation for G. Val and "filled the seats" with people who were moved to help him. I cried at the beauty of that.

On Friday, December 15, G. Val celebrated his 58th birthday. I am so thankful to have been there, along with his daughter, sister and close friends to share that day. Know that his pain was manageable at that time, and I believe he had completed everything he needed to before passing. He was surrounded by love, and he knew it.

Memorial services are being planned for both Ashland and Seattle. G. Val wished to be cremated; services will occur sometime in January. Notices will appear in Seattle and Ashland papers, as well as on social media and this site.

Again, thank you for contributing to the care of this incredibly special man. He will be deeply missed.

G. Val Is In Hospice Care.

Hello. I wanted to let you know that G. Val has entered hospice care in Ashland. He has bravely battled his disease and is preparing to transition.

He has many friends by his side, and his family members have traveled to be with him over the past few days.

Thank you so much for your support, which made medical care and other expenses less burdensome. Because of you, G. Val didn't have to worry about the cost of treatment or living expenses. That piece of mind was a huge gift, I am sure.

I will update this site as necessary. For now, please keep G. Val in your thoughts and prayers.

Hello again! It's "Giving Tuesday" today! Just a note to let you know that we are still hoping to "fill the Bowmer" with 600 individual donors. The Angus Bowmer Theatre at Ashland has 600 seats, and we are up to about 565 so far! It would be great to collectively "fill the theatre" with friends and supporters of G. Val through donations.

Thanks again for spreading the word - we have had a wonderful response. G. Val continues to fight, and your contribution(s) make the holidays that much brighter. Please share, tweet, post, and otherwise get the word out!
