Astronomy at the Beach

The Great Lakes Association of Astronomy Clubs (GLAAC) and Kensington Metropark will be hosting the 20th Annual “Astronomy at the Beach," September 9 and 10, 2016.

“Astronomy at the Beach” is South East Michigan’s largest and best attended star party and has introduced thousands of participants to the world of science and astronomy through evening lectures and hands on observing.

Past keynote speakers have included noted comet finder and writer David Levy, NASA Cassini/Saturn Senior Mission Scientist Stephen Edberg, and astronauts Jack Lousma, Jerry Ross, and Dr. Andrew Feustel, senior editors of both “Sky & Telescope” and “Astronomy” magazines, as well as many other notable scientists and astronomers.

Last year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Nicolle Zellner, from Albion College.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Fred Espenak, NASA’s Mr. Eclipse. More information and photos may be found at www.glaac.org.

The GLAAC mission is to heighten the public’s awareness of astronomy, the sciences and to serve as a gateway to those individuals in the hobby. Our club members participate by setting up their own telescopes for the public to observe through as well as answer questions and give advice. We expect 2016 to be well attended as many families look forward to “Astronomy at the Beach”.

As always, this is an all age’s family event. Last year we had in excess of 3000 attendees.

We are seeking donations to cover the costs of our speaker fees and travel, as well as flyer printer costs and other operational expenses. Donations in any amount will be greatly appreciated.

GLAAC is a volunteer organization made up of members of local astronomy clubs. We do all the planning for free. GLAAC is also a 501[c]3 organization. All monies donated go directly to funding the event. If you donate $5 all $5 will be used to pay for the event. We, the organizers and planners work for free and for the love of bringing astronomy to everyone that attends.

A list of donors will be advertised on the GLAAC.ORG website.

Thank you for considering our request for the supporting of “Astronomy at the Beach”.
