Global Hands Run4Africa

Global Hands aims to tackle issues regarding local and global inequality by raising consciousness about local and global issues through community engagement. Additionally, Global Hands is interested in supporting people build their capacities to address these issues. Our belief is that we should teach people how to fish, rather than just give fish. Consequently, Global Hands, both as a charity and as a social enterprise, has had a great impact on both local and international communities over the last four years with hardly any mainstream funding. All directors, officers and volunteers give up their time voluntarily to support the cause of Global Hands; therefore it is important that whilst we continue to build our drive for financial sustainability as a social enterprise, that we also continue to raise funds to support the capacity building and public good that we do. This run/walk for Africa has been done on an annual basis since its inception in 2013.

We believe in the power of ordinary people to transform their lives; and have positioned this fundraising as such.

Thousands of young people continue to die every year by going through the “backway” in order to escape the clutches of poverty by going to Europe at all costs. From the proceeds of the Run4Africa, a sustainable youth development fund will be set up, for young people to bid and access capacity building projects that provide solutions to the backway.

Candle of Hope Challenge

#candleofhope #backwaysolutions

The  #candleofhope #backwaysolutions challenge is a social media campaign to highlight the horrible situation of hopelessness that drives young people, largely from Sub-Saharan Africa, to attempt to get into Europe at all cost in search of greener pastures; often resulting in many fatalities as evidenced by the constant stories on our TV screens, of migrant boats capsizing in the Mediterranean or Atlantic ocean, for those in the West. For those in Sub-Saharan African countries like The Gambia, this is more real as whole communities are depleted and stories of young men and women losing their lives across the Sahara desert or in the seas is a daily occurrence.

The #candleofhope challenge encourages individuals or groups to light candles of hope in the most desolate and darkest places, literary and symbolically, and suggest #backwaysolutions. This could be recorded as an image or a video and shared as widely as possible on social media. This campaign will culminate in the Run4Africa scheduled for the 29th April 2017 to take place in Leicester (UK) and Manduar (The Gambia) simultaneously.
