A senseless act of violence has harmed someone we love.
Who is Waldo
Waldo Perez Ortiz manages the vineyard and grounds for us at Alexis Bailly Vineyard. He’s been with us for eight years and when he’s not outside, he’s helping us in the cellar with wine production.
A kind and loving family man, his salary helps his wife, one son and three daughters back home in Mexico. We think of him as part of our family here at the winery.
Waldo and his family are from the mountain area of Oaxaca, an area of Mexico known for it's indigenous cultures and especially famous for the delicious chili pepper sauce known as Mole that Waldo loves to make for family and friends.
Waldo is a devoted member of the Victory Covenant Church in St. Paul where he plays keyboard and guitar at church services and other gatherings. His favorite quote from the Bible is one we can all be inspired by:
"I can do all this through Him who gives me strength." (Phillipians 4:13)
Waldo sometimes moonlights a second job. His youngest daughter recently left school as they couldn't afford to keep her in college in Mexico.
What Happened to Waldo
At 3am the morning of Saturday July 20th, as he was leaving his second job at a laundry service in St. Paul, Waldo was pulled out of his car and severely beaten with a rock by a lone assailant who then bashed in all the windows of his car and left Waldo injured on the street.
While doctors say he’ll probably make a full recovery, Waldo still suffers from dizziness and double vision. He hasn’t been able to work for a month and his family depends on his employment for their existence.
We’re hoping to raise $20,000 to help Waldo pay his medical bills, do car repairs, file for permanent residency and get his wife, whom he hasn’t seen for nine years, legal entrance into the United States.
