We are raising money to help my cousin's family. On Saturday, November 29, 2014 her husband went into the hospital because he was having difficulty breathing and an elevated heart rate. After many tests they ordered a CAT scan with contrast and found a blood clot in his lungs. The clot was treatable and it was believed that Fred would be released within a few days. Saturday night a team came in to do ultrasounds on Fred's legs to see if he had any other clots. He did. On Sunday, November 30, 2014 things took a turn for the worse. Fred's breathing was once again labored and his heart rate elevated even more. The doctors called my cousin Jenn to let her know that they would be moving Fred to ICU.
When Jenn went to the hospital to see her husband he could hardly talk and was wearing a full face oxygen mask. He was pale and appeared to be in a lot of pain. That afternoon Fred sent Jenn a text message advising that the doctors wanted to do a procedure which would put filters in his veins preventing any more large clots from getting into his lungs. At 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 30, 2014 Fred went to get the filter procedure done. After the procedure was complete and the team was bringing Fred back to his room, he went into Cardiac arrest in the elevator. The clot in his lung moved into his Pulmonary artery blocking oxygen from getting to his heart. The doctors were able to establish a pulse, but his condition was critical.
In order to save his life, a large dose of clot busting medicine was needed. The risk with doing this was that Fred could develop bleeds anywhere in his body. Also his lungs were not able to function 100% so Fred was put on a ventilator and a special machine called an ECMO (which pulls blood from a vein in the leg, oxygenates it in this machine and then pumps it back into the body though an artery in the leg). Fred was also put into a medically induced coma because his body was trying to fight to breathe, which was hurting him more than helping him.
Fred's heart stopped again on Tuesday, December 2, 2014. The doctors were able to revive him again, but because his pressure fell and his heart stopped again his kidneys started to fail. On Wednesday, December 3, 2014 he was put on dialysis to remove the toxins from his body due to his kidneys not functioning. Even then my cousin and her family were hopeful that Fred would be able to turn it all around. Unfortunately this was not the case.
On the morning of Friday, December 5, 2014 at 8:45 am, Jenn was called, once again, by Fred's doctors. His heart had stopped again, this time for 45 minutes to an hour. They were doing everything that they could, but it did not look good. The doctors advised Jenn to get to the hospital. By the time she had gotten to the hospital, there was nothing further that the doctors could do. Fred was going to pass, it was just a matter of waiting for his heart to stop. Jenn, her parents, and Fred's parents sat in the waiting room until the team cleaned Fred up and then waited in his room by his side while he passed from this world into the next. Fred was pronounced at 11:32 am on Friday, December 5, 2014.
Now my cousin is left to raise their two wonderful children aged 5 & 3 alone, while struggling to pay for their house, day care, and other bills. I am raising money to help Jenn with these expenses so that she doesn't have to remove her children from the only home that they have ever known. I am asking for your help. The money that we raise will help my cousin to pay for her mortgage and allow her children to live in the house. The house is not just a home, but a place where every memory that the two kids have of their father were made. Please help me to help my cousin and her children keep their strongest tie to Fred.
