Foundations for a New Beginning

We are Ecuadorian twins living in the USA and Japan, moved by the devastating damage caused by the earthquake of April to the coastal towns of Ecuador. Some of these towns were the beautiful beaches we used to vacation at while growing up there. In fact, we took our families there three months before the earthquake hit.
Rebuilding after a catastrophic earthquake takes years, and for poor countries, such as Ecuador, maybe even decades. Four months have passed and more than 6,000 families (almost 30,000 people) are still living in tents with little hope to get out of this situation. Because of poor construction, some of the coastal towns were severely damaged. In some instances 60 to 80 percent of the constructions collapsed, leaving the homeless without hospitals, schools or churches. To make things worse, some of the rural towns were mainly fishing villages where the only livelihood was fishing in their canoes, many of which also got damaged. Tourism was developing; yet many of the small hotels collapsed, leaving many people jobless, too. There is a lot of despair in this area, but there is also so much generosity in this world! Rebuilding these towns will take people like you and me willing to lead efforts such as this one. Let’s help one more family have a new beginning!
Together, we can make a difference; no donation is too small! All the money will be spent on building houses with the Foundation Niños de María for the Project Nuevos Cimientos (New Foundations), which is working in the towns located along the devastated coast of Ecuador. Each earthquake-resistant house costs US$6,300. The houses are about 410 square feet and have a kitchen, dining room, bathroom and two bedrooms. The chosen families are required to put in some hours as sweat equity. Together, we can be the hope and give them a new beginning!
