Support the Promise of Better Days for the McDonald Family

“I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years. “

Jeremy D. McDonald (39) was the epitome of the future of agriculture. Raised by his parents, Gary and Sharon, on their Virginia Century Farm, “Shen-Val”, in Frederick County, Virginia, Jeremy devoted each and every day to farming. From before sunrise to long after sunset, not a day passed with less than 100% effort to better himself, his family, and the agriculture industry. He was truly one who worked in acres, not in hours.

Unfortunately, tragedy strikes when least expected and Jeremy was taken from his loving family and fertile fields on Friday, December 11, 2015.  Jeremy was a proud father, a loving husband, and a cherished son. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 13 years, Missy, and their 11-year-old son, Tyler, as well as his parents and countless friends.

A professional dairyman and cattleman, Jeremy is nationally-known for his attention to genetic details and superior breeding standards. When he wasn’t showing cows and winning awards on the national circuit, he was often recruited as a judge where he utilized his knowledge and experience to guide other producers and influence better industry performance.

Jeremy and Missy represent the fourth generation to farm at Shen-Val, and Tyler (fifth  generation) is already making a name for himself in the industry, winning 2013 reserve junior champion at the Southeast National show in Louisville, KY at the young age of 9.

Farming is a labor of many loves – the love of agriculture, family, community, and life. Jeremy carried himself with dignity and pride…in his family, his farm, and himself.

In the hours and days that have followed since the news of this tragic loss, thousands of messages of love and support have flooded in for the family from around the country. Many are asking for suggestions of how to help, even if from a long distance. This GoFundMe page has been established to provide a way for those who want to support the family.

Family farms built America and every farm tells a story – we want to preserve Jeremy’s passion for agriculture and assist the McDonald family in writing their next chapter, as they work diligently to define their new tomorrows.
