Allow me 5 minutes of your time which may be one of the most life changing 5 minutes ever.  I am on here about my cause to correct a wrong done to my family and I in America. I stood up against Female Genital Mutilation-FGM against my daughter and it cost me over $100,000.  I eventually won my case against my ex-husband who believed in this crime but the financial devastation this case has taken on my life is devastating to say the least. My story was published in the UK Guardian news; the United Nations acknowledged and sent a representative at an event I hosted.

The cost of protecting my daughter was high, financially and especially emotionally. In addition to incurring the wrath of my fellow community – the beloved community that raised me – I had to pay enormous legal fees totaling $130,000. This is a high cost for almost anyone, and it was astronomical to me, the daughter of parents who earned only enough to survive through their jobs at fast-food restaurants. There went the money I had saved for school. And even after the judge ruled in my favor, I had to pay $900 a month for supervised visits out of my salary, leaving me with barely enough to cover the rent.

Of course even more painful was the dissolution of my marriage, the shunning from my community, and the many indignities along the way. During the trial, my ex-husband ordered all of my medical documents to be released and reviewed. Although I had nothing to hide, it was an invasion of my privacy that still haunts me; since then, I hesitate to seek medical care for even the most common ailments.

I mention these costs not to complain but to illustrate that they were nothing compared to the joy of protecting my daughter from FGM. In fact, this was a small price to pay for knowing that my daughter would remain whole, free of the devastating physical, psychological and spiritual crises that FGM would have precipitated.

I started a campaign, 501c3 not for profit organization out of my plight. We believe that FGM is a crime, which deprives baby girls, young girls, and women of their human rights. We also believe that the health of any girl is not a privilege but a right.

Please help me raise $5,000 today.
