Flavia Nacimento has been diagnosed with ALS, Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Flavia is the wife of Alex Castellar. Flavia and Alex have 2 children, Aurthur age 8 and Alice age 2.
ALS causes destruction of motor neurons throughout the body. Motor neurons send impulses to muscles telling them to function. Motor neurons control speech, swallowing, breathing and movement of arms and legs. When the motor neurons are not working properly, as in ALS, the muscles try to work harder thus the patient has muscle twitching, muscle spasms and extreme fatigue, they get very tired quickly.
Flavia began having symptoms in February of 2018. Flavia is having difficulty with speaking, has weakness of her arms and legs and tires very quickly.
Currently there is little treatment for ALS, the cause is unknown in most cases.
Flavia is exploring current treatment options, all are very expensive and time consuming.
Flavia will be exploring research treatment options including stem cell transplant trials ongoing in the US and other countries.
