Farmworker Health Initiative

We are a group of students from the University of Connecticut looking to raise money for farmworkers. This population is one of the most underrepresented and most at risk for health issues in The United States. We hope to increase the levels of health in this population and as a result support both healthy workers and farms.

We have created the Farmworker Health Initiative to more effectively fill the gaps in medical care while utilizing the already existing farmworker health networks. This initiative is centered around our farmworker health kit:

This kit contains items of preventive care that can easily be taken in and out of the field on a daily basis. Thus, the workers can be protected from the majority of the main ailments they suffer. For example, skin cancer, heat stroke, and infection are just a few of the many severe health conditions these farmworkers face.

Each kit costs around 12 dollars and contains: 

(2) White longsleeve t-shirts (for sun protection and to detect ticks more easily)
(1) Cooling towel (to prevent overheating)
(1) Pair of Sunglasses (to prevent eye conditions such as pterygium)
(1) 26 oz. Water bottle (to stay hydrated)
(1) Antibiotic Ointment (to prevent infections)
(1) Pack of bandaids

While providing these kits may not seem revolutionary we have realized that they contain items workers may not have access to and therefore can make a large difference when incoprated into a workers daily life.
