Escamequita Emergency Food&Shelter

Tropical storm Nate. My neighbors just didn't see it coming. The rivers and ravines were beyond capacity and created a waterway of distruction.

They lost food, clothes, livestock, walls and more. My neighbors are incredibly resilient and capable but need funds to do it. It's still rainy season here so we need to get them dry and back on their feet quickly. I know you're not here but trust me when I say, that to hug cold, wet crying women is a life changing, emotional moment.  
Several families lost everything in the recent storm. It's time to give something back to this beautiful country and big hearted people. Please help rebuild their houses and lives.

All monies donated will go directly to the purchase of items needed. We will donate transportation and manpower. Together we will get this community back on their feet and smiling againg.

In the early hours of the morning on Thursday, October 5th with very little warning, Tropical Storm Nate hit our beloved Esqemaquita. We knew a storm was coming, but expected it to hit the East Coast of Nicaragua. Had the local community been warned, they would have moved to safe ground. They would have tied down their personal possessions and animals and prepared. Instead when the rivers rose in the middle of the night, entire homes were swept away. When displaced families started to arrive at Rancho Chilamate early Thursday morning we began to grasp the extent of the damage. One family woke up just in time to get themselves out of their house before their entire home was swept away. They watched as their dog was hit by a falling tree and disappeared into the river.
Rancho Chilamate became a makeshift shelter as families arrived to dry off and deal with the trauma of the previous night. We went out to assess the damage on Friday morning but the road was impassable due to fallen trees and overflowing riverbeds. This video shows what we finally saw when we were able to get out. In some cases the homes still stood but the water had taken the entire contents with it. In the video you can see one woman sitting by her front door. The frame remains but the walls are gone. Later in the video you see a large heavy cement sink that was dragged away by the waters.
