Greetings All! My name is Kendra Smith and I am a Peace Corps Volunteer living in a rural village in Southwestern Uganda called Omungari or Engari for short. My Ugandan supervisor once told me that the way to hide information in Africa is by putting it in a book. Ever since hearing that I knew that I wanted to help develop a library and increase literacy in my village. I am in the process of getting a community library built out of recycled plastic bottles but will be short on funds to supply the library with books. Which is pretty much the whole point! So I'm trying to raise money to buy books and to help pay for a shipment of books being sent from America to Uganda. Any type of donation would be most wonderful and help this amazing community become more literate together! I put a limit of $1000 but the more the better! If you have books and would like to send them to me directly please send them to the address below:

I am looking for all different types of books (children, young adult, informative, enjoyment, etc) although children are the target audience especially in terms of generating interest in books. Although dictionaries, encylopedias, wildlife books, world history books, maps, coloring books, etc. All are most welcome!

Wabare Munonga!! Thank you very much!!

The group photo is of some of the secondary school students that I brought to a youth empowerment and leardship camp. These students are amazing and want to go far in life but have limited access to resources that can help them do so and this includes books.

The library is coming along! The next stage will involve finishing the floor and roof as well as framing up the walls. Then filling the plastic bottles with rubbish that the local children helped me to collect throughout the community. Books should start to arrive soon as well!

Unfortunately, we underestimated the amount of timber needed for finishing up the roofs and walls. We have already used a good portion of the money raised to cover those costs. But we still need money for bookshelves and to cover a bit more cost of books being sent to Uganda.

Please help to raise more funds! We are getting so close! Any little amount will greatly help!! Thank you all so much for the support thus far!

I cannot even begin to express my gratitude to everyone that donated towards this library project. I continue to be amazed by the generosity of the people I know and others. I want to especially thank Bonnie Nankivell for her amazing support and for donating over $300 to help put the total amount of funds raised at $1000!!! I know this will help to finish and make the Engari Community Library an inspiring place for Engari community members to learn and grow as a community. Thank you all so much!!

I'm Joy Davis' mom and I like to read too. I also remember that Joy said that her Engari students had a hard time writing stories because they had so little exposure to reading stories. So I think that this is a very worthwhile endeavor.
