Emergency fund for refugee family

Emergency funds needed for the family Please help this hardworking family keep pay emergency costs. This is to keep their rent current on their home for June and July, and to buy a road-worthy car for $2,500 plus MVA costs.

Friends -- this is a call to meet our housing goal and to help buy a car for Rania and her kids for school and work needs. The family are refugees from Iraq living in Baltimore. Rania is a hardworking mom who hopes to keep her home and to her recent jobs as well as new ones. Hassan, her 5 year-old son, will need transportation everyday to his Autism-related disorder education program. Their car broke down on Wednesday with an estimate of $5,063.60 in repairs. It is cheaper to buy a new used car.

This is an immediate need for the balance of rent due in July ($513 in 30 days) and a road-worthy car ($2,500 plus taxes and tag/title).

The family entered the U.S. as refugees in December 2016 before the ban. They fled Iraq amidst death threats to Turkey, where major unrest erupted in 2015. Rania had to work hard during their waiting period in Turkey for more than 3 years. The Abdelwahids finally came to the U.S. under 207(c)1 refugee status as a family of 5 - mom Rania, and 4 kids Ali, Hussain, Zainab and Hassan.  Her youngest son Hassan, who has autism and ADHD, was born during a time of turmoil and has not known stability in his young life. Rania has stated to work -  cleaning houses, providing elder or child care, or putting her cooking skills to work. She is learning English little by little.

In pursuit of stability, Rania is accessing local city resources and community, and is partnered in her goal of self-sufficiency with Hope Harbor, a non-profit started at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church on Edmondson Avenue in west Baltimore. The family now has Medicaid and 6 months of food stamps.

This strong family is making great progress but has been traumatized by the whole process of resettlement (twice). Yet they move forward.

Rania and Ali seek work.  Please contact me if you need general cleaning, Middle Eastern cooking (She is a great cook), babysitting or elder care.

Please help if you can, and feel free to ask me any questions. I will keep this page updated as we go.

Thank you for your help during this hard time! We appreciate your kindness as do Rania and her kids. May we pay it forward for you one day.
