John Ekblad's Medical/Legal Fees

Donation protected
John Ekblad has worked in the Saint Paul Public School District for 21 years. On December 4th, 2015, he was severely injured while trying to break up a melee in a Saint Paul Public Schools cafeteria.  He remembers nothing from the melee, but witnesses say he was choked slammed onto a table by a student, run into a concrete wall, and choked while unconscious.  John credits a building level administrator for saving his life after he was rendered unconscious.  He still suffers the effects from a traumatic brain injury and post concussion syndrome.  Since the incident, John has not been able to return to work.  His current health issues include a continual headache and nerve issues that are affecting the right side of his body from his hearing to his right foot. His still suffers from cognitive difficulties including loss of some of his short term and long term memory capabilities.  Anxiety, tremors and other complications after the incident still affect his daily health. Despite all of this, John still loves his job and his students and would very much like to return to work.

The feeling among employees is that the district has not focused on providing a safe school environment for employees and students alike.  John feels no different, and he is taking a giant risk by suing the district, as the district has cultivated a culture of fear among its employees. Employees have lost their jobs after speaking out. One of his intentions is to help raise awareness of the unsafe and dangerous environment that exists for students and all staff in schools, locally and nationally.  Teachers and students alike should not feel powerless, but safe!

The SPPS school district has not treated John, and many teachers with the respect they deserve.  Not only was John injured while doing what any reasonable person would have done, but now the school district is blaming him for the injuries he sustained. The district has only been sending compensation for the amount above what workers compensation would have paid to reach his rate of pay.  John has opted out of the workers compensations route but the district refuses to pay him out of his banked sick leave pay.  Once his sick leave pay would run out he could then use his long term disability, but he is being squeezed by the District financially. After 21 years as a loyal employee, being financially squeezed after an injury on the job site is very cold-hearted.

John will use the money for medical, legal, and living expenses.  Given his current paycheck and mounting bills, he is struggling to pay for everyday living expenses. John is not the kind of man that asks for help, he is often the guy who is offering to help.  Everyone who knows John can name a time when he has helped them, he is selfless and generous. Please give what you can!  Thank you!
