While doing what she loves, spending time with friends and her Jeep adventures, Eileen Griffin’s life was forever changed in dramatic fashion. Heading home from an afternoon of off-roading, a broken driver’s side wheel left not only the Jeep, but Eileen’s life shattered. She sustained massive body and head injuries.

Eileen’s survival is simply a miracle. After being airlifted to a top-level trauma hospital, she was in a coma for three weeks. Every day since she woke up has been struggle for survival - a testament to her strength and resilience.

The accident was in early August, 2018. Time flies quickly in our daily lives. However, for Eileen, each hour of every day is in slow-motion, a grind to heal both physically and mentally.

This fund was originally set up for medical bills. As the scope of her healing reveals this is a long-term effort involving many, many months, we are now calling this effort a recovery fund.

Eileen’s operations (easily in the double digits), extended hospital stays and hundreds of tests have put medical bills in the millions. That’s reality, not hyperbole. This fund is about helping Eileen’s daily/monthly monetary commitments so she can focus solely on recovering without worrying about the burden of being financially wiped out.

We will continue to update Eileen’s recovery events and milestones. Until then, all donations are being used to help maintain Eileen’s infrastructure. The support from friends and strangers is overwhelming. Eileen is appreciative of all the love she has received as is her family.

Eileen would give up everything to help others. This GoFundMe has been set up because now she is the one in need. Please, support this cause, and pray for her rapid healing and recovery.

Thank you.

Great news!!!!

After MONTHS of deliberations, advocating, and pushing the insurance company, Eileen has FINALLY been moved to a nationally ranked rehab facility that specializes in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and amputee recovery! This is the ideal facility to provide the care she needs to facilitate and accelerate her recovery.

Eileen will finally be with a team of medical professionals that understand TBI and can hopefully optimize her recovery. Her rehab will be intensive; She'll receive 3+ hours per day of OT/PT/SPEECH and cognitive therapies, 5-6 days per week. We cannot wait to provide more frequent updates on her recovery as she settles in and begins to tap into her rehab potential.

Thank you for your continued support and words of encouragement during this journey. It has been a difficult road to navigate, but we are very hopeful with this new opportunity that Eileen has been given.

Hi everyone,

Happy belated Thanksgiving! I had every intention of posting an update this weekend but my phone died on me while in Baltimore and we don't have internet on at Eileen's house so didn't have an opportunity, my apologies. Having seen her for the first time in over a month I can definitely see that she is getting better. After not eating a whole lot of the hospital food we brought her a bowl of mission bbq mac and cheese and mashed potatoes, it was a big hit and her eyes lit up with every bite (I'm happy to intentionally say eyes plural because we weren't sure if her right eye was going to make it). Shes doing well with her pt, sitting up almost by herself, and the therapist commented that's shes pretty strong for having been in bed for almost 4 months. Most of her communication is still just yes or no responses, we think it's because she has trouble finding the words to put together complete thoughts, so speech therapy will be important. But, she can follow along pretty well, like when I told her how much beer I bought on black Friday and she gave me a big grin and a head nod . I left feeling very optimistic and very thankful that she is still with us. EileenStrong indeed. Still a long tough road ahead of her but shes already made it this far so need to push forward one day at a time.

There is a bunch of other stuff going on that I don't have time to get into right now but will in the next few days. But thank you to everyone that continues to support Eileen and our family in this very difficult time. I hope every enjoyed their Thanksgiving!

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all doing well. Leenie is slow and steady as of late, no major changes to report. She is 100% off of the ventilator though she is still getting supplemental oxygen. They've been ramping up her rehab lately with hope that she can regain some strength which is great to see. She does pretty well sitting on the side of the bed dangling her feet, and they even got her standing up (with a lot of help of course) for a minute or so. They're reintroducing real food now, really hoping it goes well. Speech therapy also going well, she doesn't consistently interact and sometimes she doesn't have a good handle on what is going on but then she will have moments when she's spot on. So all in all it's been positive for the most part, just hoping that she keeps improving.

Mom and Dad have been staying at Eileen's house and making the trip to DC every day to stay with her. Traffic stinks but they're managing by avoiding the busy times. Anna, Kristie and I are going down for Thanksgiving so looking forward to seeing them.

That's about it for now, will have a better update once I have a chance to sit down with mom and dad. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. EileenStrong.
