Material possessions, in general, can be easily replaced. But memories, photo albums filled with those memories, items handed down from generations before you with a sentimental value that a dollar sign can't seem to touch, those things...well, they cannot be.
Already having very little to begin with, I was a victim of a house fire at the age of 8. My family lost everything aside from the clothing on our backs; anything that was still intact was so razed by the thick scent of smoke that it was unsalvageable. The vivid memories of sadness, confusion, and fear from the power those flames carried that day still are within me 20 years later.
Though the home fire couldn't be undone, what I recall clearly was the outpouring of support from my community and school to help my parents, two brothers, and I get the things we needed--shoes, socks, clothing, a 1-bedroom motel room that became our shelter for 6 months, diapers for my then-infant brother. The list continued and so did our hope that everything was going to be okay.
Yesterday afternoon, a five-alarm fire in Edgewater, NJ consumed an entire apartment complex and effected over 400 people who are in need of our support. The American Red Cross has issued a statement saying “nearly all those affected were insured and able to secure local accommodations. The Borough of Edgewater provided lodging for the remaining families.” These families still are in need of so many items that have been lost.
Examples of items the money raised in this campaign will go toward are: Soap, Brushes, Winter Coats, Tissues, Deodorant, Socks, Shoes, Diapers, Baby Powder, Clothing, Toothbrushes, toothpaste, Shampoo, Conditioner, and other necessities.
