I created this fundraiser on behalf of my dad to raise money to help pay for his upcoming heart surgery.
He has a rare condition called a Myocardial Bridge . He began having issues with chest & jaw pain and shortness of breath last summer. He had a heart cath done and blockage was discovered and 5 stents put in. He has continued to have the same symptoms and had 3 more heart caths done. The symptoms have gotten so bad that he has constant pain and will be out breath just talking at times.
A Myocardial Bridge is where a main coronary artery goes below the surface of the heart muscle instead of on top of it. He actually has a double bridge where the muscle covers the same artery in two places. It is something he was born with and is rare but it is even more rare to have symptoms from it. Every time his heart beats it is cutting off the blood flow through that artery causing pain. The doctors have tried to manage his symptoms with stents and medication (some of which he had allergic reactions to) but to no avail. High risk open heart surgery is the only option at this point.
He is a Veteran and has no insurance. He is getting treatment through the VA hospital but because he has a job he still has to pay for his medical care. He is only 62 and an active member of his church. He will be in the hospital for at least 4-5 days after surgery and unable to work for a minimum of 6 - 8 weeks (and unable to drive for at least 4 weeks). He will not be getting paid during that time. My mother takes care of my grandmother who has Alzheimer's and therefore is unable to work. Due to his recent health and being in/out of the hospital several times he has not been able to work much. He is trying to get on disability but that can take months (even a year or 2!) They will need money to pay his medical bills and living expenses during this time. His surgery is tentatively scheduled for June but he’s currently unable to work more than part-time and his symptoms have continued to worsen.
