In Loving Memory of Destiny Nelson, 17 years young, Columbus, GA

We are filled with gratitude from the outpouring of support over the loss of our dear Destiny.  Our hearts are full of love and appreciation for the continued calls, messages, visits and prayers - we are creating this account in response to the overwhelming requests to assist Destiny's family as they rebuild their lives.

The loss of a family member is never easy, the loss of a young life is even tougher...  the loss of a child is something no parent ever imagines having to endure.

Destiny was taken from us much too soon on the evening of January 16th in what is believed to have been a case of mistaken identity.  In a senseless act of violence, Destiny was shot multiple times and killed in what should have been the safety of her own home...  no one should ever have to fear the sound of someone knocking on their door.

Along with customary medical and funeral costs, this young family must also deal with the lingering costs associated with the psychological trauma of this horrible tragedy as well as rebuilding their lives in a new home.

Present in the home at the time were her mother, as well as her sisters ages 18, 11, and 9 months.

Destiny was a beautiful soul filled with hope and love of her family and community.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.  - - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Destiny lived a life of love and light.  We hope to be able to help her family find the light in this darkness with love.

"The quality of one's life not the longevity is what matters."
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Please continue to hold up this family in prayer, especially her mother and sisters.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to assist in final expenses, medical treatment for the survivors, and rebuilding their home, as they begin the long process  of applying for programs that help survivors of violent crimes.

From the outpouring of support from our family and community we WILL find light from this darkness.

On the other side of this pain we would like to see a foundation created for other Columbus families touched by gun violence in Destiny's name so that she did not die in vain.
