Hi,
I'm David Rodriguez, a 20 year old, marketing management student. This past Friday night I was studying for my final exam until 12:30 am eventually i became exhausted and fell asleep, as I was asleep my girlfriend who was still up, was cooking in the the kitchen, she overheard a fight outside between family and family friends and stepped out to mediate the situation. She was only gone for a few minutes before I was awakened by the heat and strong smell of smoke. I woke up to see her kitchen in flames to the ceiling and the first thing that came to my mind was “where is she?" I panicked as I thought she was showering and the only walkway from her bedroom to the shower was through her kitchen. Wearing only boxers I didn't think to put on anything else as that was the least of my concerns I grabbed the first thing I saw (a blanket) and still groggy from my sleep I tossed it over the fire in attempt to extinguish it, not knowing she had oil boiling. As I pulled off the blanket I was unfortunately burned from head to toe (including groin) from the oil. Due to adrenaline and fear of my girlfriend being hurt I did not care for my burns and was able to get help in time to prevent the fire from spreading as well as keep her and her family safe from being burned or injured.

Fortunately I woke up in time to get the fire out but I wasn't lucky enough to not get burned. I was rushed to St. Lukes , than transferred immediately by ambulance to Memorial Herman Houston. Because of my second and third degree burn wounds I was put in trauma care and now I have to be treated with intense care and remain on bed rest for a month because of my high risk of infection. This situation has put my family in strain as they now have to take time-off their day to watch over me as well as worry about my treatment & hospital bills. I sadly can not help because the burns prevent me from being able to move too much and I can not work for the next couple of weeks. My girlfriend has been next to me the entire time watching over and helping me to remove some of the stress from my family.

I've never been the type to ask for help much less money but this is the most difficult and traumatizing thing that has ever happened to me. Whatever anyone can help with is a blessing. Thank you for your time and If you can’t help please keep me in your prayers.
