On February 19, 2002:
Darrell Ragland was diagnosed with a rare type of pancreatic cancer. After 55 days in the hospital, doctors told Darrell, “There’s nothing more we can do for you.”
Darrell knew that he needed more than medical care to survive. With his steadfast faith in God and support from his family and friends, Darrell continues to fight a 13-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
“You have a mass in your pancreas,” my physician informed me. “The surgery will take three hours, and I will remove two-thirds of your pancreas as well as your spleen and gall bladder. You will be in the hospital 7 Days.”
I was in the hospital 55 Days and was cared for by eight doctors. I had two blood transfusions and two surgeries, including a removal of two feet of my small intestines. A few of my post-operative complications included abdominal abscesses, hypertension, congestive heart failure, rapid weight gain and loss, blood clots, and C. difficile colitis.
I was told that I have a rare form of cancer: Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (also known as Islet Cell Tumors).
On the morning of Day 40, I was awakened by the Lord, and He impressed me to read Joshua 1:9
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.”

In the afternoon of Day 40, the doctors told me that they had done all they could for me.
Although cancerous tumors metastasized throughout my liver, I insisted on participating in two clinical trials, receiving radiation treatments as well as palliative care.
13 Years Later ~ 2015:
My oncologist said that the cancer is stable with noticeable improvement. I am not dying from cancer; I am living with cancer.
