Hello! My name is Danielle Velez . I am a 36 years old stay at home mom and I study Historical European Martial Arts, otherwise known as H.E.M.A. My main focus is on German longsword fencing.
I have been practicing for almost a year now with my fiancé and my four year old daughter and love it! It has also been a factor in losing almost 70 lbs last year as part of my diet and exercise routine. I am over halfway to my goal weight and will continue to use these classes to help reach it and beyond.
I am humbly asking for your help to send me to the Western Martial Arts Workshop 2017 in September presented by the Chicago Swordplay Guild to further my education. One day I'd like to become an instructor in my guild, the Medieval Swordsman Guild of Kansas City. (Kcsword.com) This will be my first HEMA event ever! Unfortunately as a stay at home mom we do not have the extra funds available with registration so close.
The Western Martial Arts Workshop is the premier North American 4 day event for hands-on study of Historical European and American Martial Arts.
WMAW's host is the beautiful, DeKoven foundation, in Racine, WI. Located 60 miles north of Chicago, the DeKoven Foundation is a partly walled, Anglican retreat center overlooking the shores of Lake Michigan. The Foundation began as Racine College in 1852, and was the first college built west of the Appalachians. Dr. James DeKoven came from St. John's School in Delafield to become Warden of the College in 1859 and remolded the campus, modeling the quadrangle on English colleges at Oxford and Cambridge, with faculty and students living together in dormitories and eating together in a common Refectory, known today as the Great Hall.
Funding covers registration, travel, lodging and food costs.
I would need approximately $450 for registration which starts next week and fills up fast. I don't have an exact number as they haven't posted opened the registration on the website yet and I am basing this estimate on the previous WMAW costs.
Flight with a rental car would be approximately $612
flying with American Airlines and renting from Thrifty rentals.
Alternatively I wouldn't be opposed to driving, and would rather do, wich would cost $185 from Hertz plus gas money.
