Did you know that the saltine cracker was invented in St. Joseph, Missouri? A baker by the name of Frank L. Sommer invented this cracker and began selling it in the mid-late 19th century. Within a few short years he was making over $400,000/year, on CRACKERS!
He later moved to New York and was instrumental in founding NABISCO. So next time you have saltines with your soup or chili, thank this guy.
St. Joseph, Missouri has a rich architectural heritage and has many historic homes and museums to prove it. However,the home of this great inventor/baker has almost been lost. Suffering years of neglect his once grand home has been threatened with demolition. This non-profit was founded to save the home and repurpose it for the community.
Our Mission:
To save the Frank L. Sommer home (affectionately known as the Cracker House to locals) from demolition and repurpose it to benefit the community.
Our Vision: for the home to be one of the first stops when touring St. Joseph. It will provide small exhibits on other attractions in the City and be a trolley depot for historical and themed trolley tours (famous persons, famous events, historical homes, etc. ) The building will also have a community space where citizens can come learn old home restoration techniques. We hope that by saving this home we can lead to other homes being saved in our incredibly old, historic City.
