Corbin's Corner

On Saturday, June 29, 2019, five year old Corbin Schaefer was in a horrific swimming pool accident. Paramedics were able to restart his heart and help him breathe until he got to the Emergency Room. He was unresponsive and comatose, with what is considered a traumatic brain injury.
One month later, he is breathing completely on his own, awake and aware, but unable to speak or control his body in any meaningful way. He now eats through a g-tube surgically implanted in his belly. His future is mostly unknown, only that there will be years of aggressive therapy in an attempt to regain some of his former self.
Before his accident, Corbin was a super-intelligent, sweet, silly little boy. He loved to learn: he finished The Hobbit at age four, he was learning basic algebra, he appreciated language, especially plays on words, alliteration, and rhyme, he taught himself music theory and adored Beethoven. He also liked to help others; he would often entertain his baby brother and ask to do household chores, particularly "laundry tasks" and cooking: reading recipes, measuring ingredients, and stirring the bowl. He was also incredibly funny. He made up his own jokes and often threw us for a loop with his clever plays on words.
"What's the math teacher's favorite part of the plant? The square root!"
Mama: Corbin, do you want your steak medium rare? Corbin: No, I want it medium common. *big grin*
After being told not to be gross at the dinner table, Corbin made a sign for his mama that said "NO GROSS" and a crossed out circle with the number 144. Because 144 is a dozen squared, also called a gross. (Yeah, it took us a few minutes to figure that out, too.)
To give Corbin the best chance at even partial recovery, he will have years of rehabilitation and therapy. In addition to his extensive medical bills, he and his family will need to relocate to a more handicap friendly home closer to the best doctors, and purchase medical equipment including a new vehicle.
Corbin is a special little guy and he is proving to be so strong through this fight. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement - Corbin needs all the support he can get in his "Corner" for this fight.
