Coming Together Weekend Retreat

During the weekend of September 9 & 10 members of different Santa Barbara social action groups are coming together to share ideas, facts and stories to
* define a vision for an ideal government
* get to know people behind labels
* improve listening and communication skills
* identify problems and possible solutions
* develop a "People's Platform" of specific objectives and actions that will benefit our local community
Participants in small groups like Heart 2 Heart: sharing stories about racism have reported how important it is to get to know people in person over a number of hours. In contrast, the increase in posting online and the barrage of polarizing comments in the media can lead to perpetuating misunderstandings and making some people feel worse and threatened. We seek meaningful communication which allows us to move forward as individuals and as a community.
Event organizers would like to acknowledge the many local volunteers who have donated time for community benefit. Since as a community we have sought more and more of that help this year, it is appropriate to seek funding for those volunteers who are providing services they do professionally.
Donations will be used for coffee, drinks, Saturday lunch, workshop materials, supplements for Sunday potluck and honorariums for professional small group facilitators and poetry workshop.
Event is free for students, fixed income folks, unemployed, etc. For others, suggested donation (which is not deductible) is $15/day or $25 for 2 days. Names are not required.
Any excess will be used for future honorariums.
