We are writing to request your support for Gerry Voorhis, and her amazing family; Jim, Nicole and Jimmy.  Gerry and Jim  were born and raised in the Pascack Valley Community. They are married for 34 years and reside in Westwood with their two children.

Gerry is a devoted wife and mother who at age 55 has been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakobs Disease.

CJD is an extremely rare and fatal brain disorder. It affects one person in every one million per year. Ninety percent of those diagnosed will succumb to this aggressive disease within a year of diagnosis.

Unfortunately, Gerry is and will continue to experience progressive physical and cognitive impairment requiring increasing needs for skilled care.

The needs are increasing daily and assistance is needed immediately.  That is why friends and family have joined with MAYDAY MISSIONS to help raise funds for Gerry in her time of need.

Gerry is receiving hospice services, however her needs are continually increasing and costs for caregiving at home or in a facility are not covered by the family’s medical insurance nor by hospice.  With this in mind, Gerry and her family wish for her to remain in her own home and are trying to make her as comfortable as possible.  The effects of the disease require professional and skilled caregiving to keep her safe – physically and emotionally.  At the same time, her husband must continue to work in order to maintain their home and provide for their family.

Professional caregiving costs for just 12 hours per day are approximately $300.  At these rates, caregiving expenses alone will cost the Voorhis family over $110,000 within one year.  These numbers do not include medical or other related expenses.

The Voorhis family has served their community for many years.  Jimmy has been a member of the Westwood Volunteer Fire department for 39 years and served two terms as Chief.  Jimmy's father, Jake Voorhis, served the WFD from 1970 until he died in the line of duty on April 12, 1977.  Gerry joined the WFD Ladies Auxiliary in 1984, has served as President and on on many committees and in a variety of roles.  She has been an avid fundraiser for the WFD Ladies Auxiliary as well as Assumption School in Emerson and Our Lady of Mercy School in Park Ridge.  The Voorhis children still reside are helping to care for their mother.  Their son Jimmy is a WFD Cadet.

It is our turn to help them. It is times such as these that we find comfort in our roots and  residence in the Pascack Valley Community. No one stands alone when you live in our Pascack Valley Community.

Our goal is to provide a year of Home Health Aide hours for Gerry. Our goal is $110,000.

Please note that when these funds are no longer required and/or the funds exceed the initial goal, the remaining funds will be used for other medical expenses. If monies still remain they will be allocated for tuition or scholarship fund for Gerry's son Jimmy.

Your donation will be life changing and will be received by the Voorhis family, and those who love them,  with immense gratitude.

The Voorhis family thanks you for the thoughts, prayers, ongoing support and generosity.
