Citizen Science Nova Scotia

Donation protected
We are developing a citizen science and public outreach initiative for Nova Scotia. The aim of this initiative is to engage our local communities with nature and empower them to contribute to the scientific process.

Our inaugural project concerns an amazing symbiosis between amphibian egg masses and uni-cellular green algae. This relationship is a global first, you can read more about the initial discovery in the following news articles;

BBC News - LiveScience

In order to further our research on this amazing symbiosis, we would like to map breeding habitat around Nova Scotia and beyond.

This is where you come in!

To achieve this, we are developing a new web-based application where you can report salamander and wood frog egg mass sightings and upload digital photographs with basic observations about the habitats encountered, the egg masses found, and their locations.

We have the domain name citizenscienceNS.ca and we are currently developing the website. We are looking for donations from you to help us fund the growth of this project and help us turn it into a broader citizen science application which can be used by a range of local conservation and scientific interest groups.

Not only are we developing this web-based resource, we are also embarking on a educational tour of the province, engaging schools, museums, libraries, and other interested groups.

To carry out this project, we require funds for the salary of a service learning student, travel expenses, and the development and maintenance of web resources.
