This is a GoFundMe page that has been set up specifically to help Carnatic musicians in Chennai recover from the extensive loss of personal property from the recent floods.
An overwhelmingly large number of Vidwans and Vidushis have not only lost their homes, but more importantly, they have lost the tools of their trade: musical instruments and books vital to their livelihood. Without these instruments, they are unable to perform concerts and earn a living to support their families.
While we help everyone in Chennai get back on their feet, this is a special request. We seek your generous donation to help us hear the music again.
World-renowned percussion exponents have lost instruments that carry sentimental as well as historical value. Vocalists have lost manuscripts containing rare compositions. Other artists have lost instruments that have enthralled rasikas from Carnegie Hall to Sastri Hall. While there are many organizations spearheading other flood relief work for all the essentials, this funding project is highly specific. It is designed to to raise funds which will exclusively be spent towards replacing instruments, as well as assisting instrument makers to gather raw materials to get back into business.
As a fellow musician I feel that this is an important cause and we should support all those who have brought joy to us through their music.
We are working with Bhairavi Fine Arts, INC. in the United States, a registered non-profit dedicated to the support and promotion of Indian arts in North America.
The funds will be transferred to The Artery an arts organization in India who will receive the money when we transfer it. Money will be given to a list of musicians in Chennai, India who have been affected by the floods. They will have submitted applications to receive funds from the Artery.
The money will be used to replace musical instruments, repair damaged instruments, replace books and manuscripts that have been washed away in the floods,
