On March 24th, history will be made in Washington, DC as we march on Washington to demand stronger gun control laws. Our schools are not safe. It is hard to find a high schooler nowadays who hasn't had the thought: "A shooter could walk into my school anytime and murder my friends and I. Is this day my last?" Teenagers are finding their voices now more than ever, and the march is our time to really be heard.

The Connecticut shoreline is made up of incredible towns that produce equally as incredible youth. The recent Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy has struck a chord among us and has left many youths along the shoreline impassioned and demanding change from our lawmakers, both state and nationwide.

There has been an expressed interest among our fellow teens on the shoreline to become a part of history and attend the March For Our Lives in DC, but one thing stands in the way: money. Trains and flights are expensive (and booked solid), and individual car rides are a nightmare to coordinate.

In an ongoing survey targeted at shoreline youth, around 72% of teens said they were interested in attending the DC march, but only 30% of them had actually made efforts to plan their own trip. When asked what held them back from planning/executing a trip, about 56% listed transportation and 47% listed money as key factors. When asked, "If the trip were free (or very close to it), how much more likely would you be to come to the D.C. march?", 38% percent said they would almost certainly go, and 20% said they would be much more likely to go. 83% said it would change their opinion on attending the march in some capacity (either somewhat more likely, more likely, much more likely, or almost certain). As you can see, there is a strongly expressed interest.

The money from this fundraiser will go towards subsidizing seats for those who want to attend. The current plan is to organize a Rally Bus (rallybus.net), which at minimum takes 40 people.

Seats after group discounts are $105.63 per person, and assuming we support 40 youth,
$2,000 will make each ticket about $67.71
$2,500 = $57.71
$3,000 = $47.71
$3,500 = $37.71
$4,000 = $27.71
$4,500 = $17.71
$5,000 = $7.71
$5,385 = FREE!
(estimates are approximate)

These plans are subject to change in the future as we explore cheaper options and measure demand.

As of now, the money will be evenly distributed to those who have purchased tickets. We are in talks with various nonprofits to facilitate the distribution of funds, so we may shift to that method of withdrawal in the future.

In its current state, this project is targeted at youth on the shoreline, specifically Guilford, but with enough statewide support, we will begin efforts to open this opportunity up to youth in other areas of Connecticut.

We are also looking for organizations willing to make larger-scale contributions that will aid in expanding the reaches of our efforts.

Our goal will lower the price to about $18 for each passenger. This is a very reasonable price that many are able to pay, but if we can go above and beyond to let even more kids go, we will! Keep sharing and donating so we can expand this project as far as possible!

Excess donations (if any) will be contributed towards the March For Our Lives organization.

These efforts are being organized by Tyler Felson and Brendan O'Callahan, both Seniors at Guilford High School. The funds will be facilitated by Virginia Brasher-Cunningham of the First Congregational Church.

Thank you for empowering the leaders of our future!
