Mom's Cancer Fighting Medical Fund

All of our lives we never seem to think about the bad things that can happen, blinded by hopefulness and faith that "it won't happen to us" until unexpectedly everything you planned on, living a normal, happy life, gets thrown in front of an emotional bus that shatters your once stable world.

Two weeks ago, we found out that my mom, Colleen Lewin, has cancer. My stepdad broke the news to me over the phone, and I could hear in his voice a sense of fear that I have never heard from him before in my life. He's a strong man but the unexpected can rattle anyone's core. He tried to downplay the situation by saying that they were getting more tests done and the doctor could always be wrong.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

That night, I didn't know whether to cry or be angry. And since then, it's been a lot of both. I've been trying to find a way to deal with the anger, the confusion, the hope, the sorrow and whatever tomorrow brings.

My mom has had two surgeries so far, each of which has come with a bill of around $10,000. She does not have health insurance and because she has been dealing with lupus, which insurance companies consider a pre-existing condition, it has not been an option for a number of years.

She is in need of an hysterectomy, which will hopefully remove the cancer for good. The doctors have told my parents that the costs for surgery and a short hospitalization will cost upwards of $120,000

I'm not good at asking for help. I'm usually to strong-willed and stubborn. I learned it from my parents. The emotional and psychological wreckage I'm dealing with internally has been overwhelming but I keep coming back to the fact that we need to ask for help. And that's why I am writing this, to put down all the struggles and humbly ask that if you can help with any amount of donation, I myself, my family and friends would greatly appreciate any support.

If you know my mother at all, you know that she is the most selfless, compassionate and loving soul on the planet. She has been sacrificing for me, my siblings, my family and friends for the 37 years I've been alive and it wouldn't matter who you are, if you happen to stumble to our doorstep in need of a hot meal or just a cup of coffee, she wouldn't hesitate to take care of you and make you some dessert before you had the chance to thank her.

She's shown unconditional love to hundreds or maybe even thousands of people throughout her life and I am humbly asking that the world do the same for her in this time of need. Thank you in advance for your support.

I love you, Mom.
