WHAT IS THE CAKE PROJECT?
CAKE stands for Cleaning up Archetype for Kids and Environment. It's a unique project to educate and implement a program related handling pollution, proper garbage disposal, environmental hazards, sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness. It's a clean up drive to raise awareness and to give the children and youth of Cambodia a chance to grow up in a healthy and clean environment. It's main objective is to foster a sense of responsibility towards the community by creating a generation that takes care of the surroundings actively and consciously. They will responsibly educate the adults in their home and lives who may have forgotten the importance of cleanliness.

WHY IS CAKE UNIQUE ?
CAKE is an initiative of Little Hearts Organisation, who are providing a house and education to kids in the area of Arey Khsat (Phnom Penh). 38 orphans are living in our orphanage and some 120 additional kids are coming daily to complete their education through intensive English and IT courses. Confronted with the growing challenge of waste management in the country, we decided to set-up a project called CAKE (Cleaning up Archetype for Kids and Environment).

WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT CAKE ?
If we can prove that we can make a difference in our area of Arey Khsat, we will have a Proof-of-Concept towards the Government asking them to collaborate scalling-up our initiative.

WHAT IS LITTLE HEARTS FOUNDATION ?
Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Help is desperately needed to care for some of the youngest ones in Cambodia that would otherwise be left to fend for themselves. Little Hearts is here to give them the stable home and the happy childhood that every kid deserves. We also provide them with an education that prepares them for life as a healthy, caring and productive member of Cambodian society.

Because we are an official licensed orphanage we can only welcome real orphans to live at Little Hearts but we acknowledge that besides these kids other children should also benefit from our free educational courses; that’s the reason why we welcome these kids to our school but also support some very poor vulnerable families at the country side.

WHO IS BEHIND THIS PROJECT ?
The idea for this project originated from two Belgian brothers who witnessed misery and suffering as they travelled through the remote areas of Asia. Tony & Jimmy Geeraerts decided they wanted to give something back to the people who had welcomed them so warmly when they had so little to give. With close friends, Jo Offeciers, Dimitri Segers and Joost Zweegers, they created a non- profit organization called "Little Hearts". The team initially renovated an old colonial school building just outside of Phnom Penh, and in May 2009, they opened an orphanage that housed up to 50 kids. But since there are many more under-privileged Cambodian children in need of a home, Little Hearts decided in 2012 to build a bigger orphanage and become a larger organization. Jan Offeciers, Katrine Horemans, Alain Heureux and Patricia Geeraerts joined the team and all together, they opened in October 2013 a new orphanage that can comfortably house up to 80 kids. Next to this Belgian team, we have a fully dedicated local team on the ground including a supervisor, a care-taker, two nannies, various teachers, a chef, a cleaning lady and two security guards.

HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED ?
Continuing CAKE involves significant costs. In order to maintain this project, we need 50.000 €. This will be used to fund the next 6 months of our project for:
• 25.000 €  - A Team of Sanitation workers
 •  4.000 € - Communication tools within the Area on streets and in schools
 •   2.500 € - Training sessions towards population
• 11.500 € - Environmental facilities to store the waste at different disposal sites
 •   7.000 € - Transport of waste towards central disposal in Phnom Penh

SOME MORE INFO ABOUT THE ORGANISATION BEHIND THE CAKE PROJECT
All our kids attend local schools, as well as additional courses at our facility (English, Khmer, mathematics, computer, art, traditional dance, etc) which will help them to prepare for university or a fulfilling and rewarding career. Our ultimate goal is to make sure that every child we take under our wings will grow up to become an educated, successful and responsible adult. With a brighter future ahead of them, our hope is that they will avoid the exploitation and corruption in Cambodian life, and provide an inspiration to others to help build a more rewarding and productive community. However, there is still much to be done. The achievement of this project will only be possible with your help.
