Brother Sims, (Fernandez Sims), was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama  and is proud to affirm that he is a product of the Birmingham City Schools system; with attendance at Kingston and Gibson Elementary Schools, Kennedy Middle School, and Woodlawn High School, (Go Colonels)! Brother Sims is an even prouder graduate of Southeastern Bible College, also located in Birmingham, Alabama.

Brother Sims is a patriot and proud veteran of the US Armed Forces. He has served his country in the United States and also on foreign soil. After receiving his training as a dental technician and combat medic; Brother Sims served with the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps infantry units, receiving medals for service. Brother Sims, at the end of his service, proudly received an Honorable Discharge. Brother Sims is a firm believer in serving God, family, country and community.

Brother Sims is married to the love of his life LaWanda Minley Sims, daughter of VA chaplain John Lee Minley(deceased) and wife Naomi Minley (Naomi is touted as the world’s best mother-in-law). Brother Sims and LaWanda reside in the Southside community in Birmingham and are enjoying family and married life. Brother Sims and LaWanda are the proud parents of five children. Two children of the five children are presently enrolled in the Birmingham City School system.

Brother Sims loves Alabama, especially his hometown, Birmingham; he has worked tirelessly for his country and community with 35 years of service through professional and volunteer efforts. This distinguished professional and volunteer service includes:  service with honor in the US Armed Forces; community service with various businesses, nonprofits, and faith communities such as:  Alabama Youth Homes, A.G. Gaston Nursing Home, National AIDS Fund, St. Vincent’s Home Health and Hospice,  Oak Grove Baptist Church Hwy 119, Alabama Animal Adoption Society, Firehouse Shelter, Spirit of Luke Ministries, Birmingham Health Care for the Homeless, Care First Hospice, Mission Birmingham, Christian Service Mission, Aids Alabama, ARC of Jefferson County, Christians Concerned for Prisoners, The Sickle Cell Foundation, and has partnered with many more organizations.

Brother Sims is a local pastor and church planter of Charis Community Church, which is at present, relocating to the Avondale community of Birmingham from Homewood, Alabama. Brother Sims is currently serving at Impact Family Counseling where he is working with the Family Courts in Birmingham and Bessemer. He is also serving in a Community Care outreach capacity in impoverished areas of the city, and providing case management with the Fatherhood Initiative (teaching and modeling to parents how to be better parents for the future of their children).

Brother Sims is faithfully committed to bringing about healing, transformative change to the city of Birmingham, its surrounding communities, and the whole state of Alabama. Brother Sims is committed to making Birmingham, once again, the Magic City, and not the Tragic City. Brother Sims is committed to working with all members and entities of our community. All citizens who desire to be heard and have a voice in the decisions and affairs to achieve a better Birmingham; you will no longer be ignored. You will be heard; you will have a voice in this change!
